Pumpkins in my summer squash

Apparently my little helper switched some tags on some of my transplants and I now have 6 3' pumpkins in the middle of my summer squash/zucchini row. Can I transplant them when they are this big or should I leave them where they are and try to control them a bit? They are growing about 6" per day right now and will quickly take over. Oh...here's the culprit during the seed starting time.

Well, as culprits go, a mighty cute one.

The pumpkins being 3' long already might be iffy to move. If you think you can get them out w/ a good shovel-full of soil, I might give it a try. Move on a cloudy day, just before or while raining; then shade them for a few days 'til they re-establish.

No matter how hard you try to control them, the vines will probably overwhelm the summer squash. Guess it comes to priority.

Pumpkins don't transplant well especially when they are vining. I would not recommend moving those vines. If your summer squash are anything like mine you will get a bunch of fruit and then the plants will be attacked by something (usually the squash vine borer) and they will die way before winter squash are close to being done. Maybe you would be able to just keep the pumpkin vines out of the way for awhile by directing them wherever you want them and then let them take over when the summer squash start dying.

Another possibility is that maybe you could stake the summer squash and make them grow vertically on a pole. Then the pumpkins can just roam along the ground and hopefully not be in the way.

Hi there! I'd love to trade with you :) I have onion seeds, crookneck and straightneck yellow squash AND Dill's Atl Pumpkin seeds, another variety of large pumpkin AND the lumina pumpkin :) I also have some great watermelons and unusual types of tomatoes. I would LOVE some of those ruffled daffodil bulbs, pink delight butterfly bush, small orange 'maple leaf' morning glory, candyturt (tuft? lol), purple columbine, white W/ purple center datura, and golden chain tree. Both plants have already successfully produced fruit. So we have had female and male blossoms running amuck. The bees are buzzing, the ants are anting....we got us really great polinators! But then suddenly ----- All new female flowers are not getting past about 1 & 1/2" (inches)tall before they start to shrivel and fall off. So they don't ever get close to opening to be polinated. Does that explain the trouble better?

Pumpkin expert I'm not but I have made pies from pumpkins when I found pumpkins cheaply around here. I made the pies directly from the pumpkins and froze them. My kids loved them. I thought they were a little stringy but DH and kids didn't care. Wouldn't it be easier to find a farmers market or fruit stand around halloween and purchase your pumpkins for pies then? After halloween the pumpkin fields around here are littered with pumpkins. Probably what they sell for canning. I use a lot of pumpkin, canned, and perhaps it might be worthwhile to can your own.

LOL! What fun to come in here and find such entertainment :) And an award!! You can be sure the trophy will be proudly displayed along with my eight "West Virginia State Quack Grass Digging Championship" trophies. For those who tuned in late, this is the thread that started all this: zucchini as winter squash? So I see that moschata was not originally specified -- no wonder I began the autumn with a spare bedroom full of cartoon-like over sized squash resting on plastic sheeting in case they explode! I'm always looking for ways to extend the garden produce through the winter, so this has been fun and motivating, if not quite yet successful. My personal opinion about Trombocino: insipid as summer squash, deliciously sweet as winter squash. Could it be that it is simply a winter squash that's a summer squash wannabe? Sponges for dinner! (my dog likes them too)
