Too late to plant cool weather vegetables?

I know it's June, but my garden just got destroyed by not one but two hailstorms, the first with quarter sized hail, the second with golfball sized hail. And I'd just today gotten finished planting everything.

Is it too late to plant things like peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, and carrots? I know it's too late to plant potatoes. The tomatoes were in containers so I managed to haul them up onto the porch. And not all of the melons and squash had sprouted yet. But do I have to wait another 14 months before I get any peas, brassica, or leafy vegetables?

My irises had just started to break into bloom. Now I have to wait a year before I get any irises.

Spinach and lettuce don't like the heat but the rest will do ok. I plant second crops of broccoli, cauliflower, peas and potatoes in July and I don't plant the Brussels sprouts until July because they need the cool fall temps to sweeten up in the fall anyway.

Don't you hate the hail! I hold my breath every time a storm moves in. I hope that's the end of it for you this year.

So sorry to read about your garden. You could start broccoli & cauliflower seeds for a fall crop (plant out end of July/early August.) You could start peas, spinach & lettuce in August too, for a fall crop. I've never tried it, but I hear peas do better in the fall.

I've never had luck with carrots. I have some lettuce, pea & broccoli seeds if you need any. Let me know if you're looking for any & what varieties & I'll let you know what I have (that's not listed on my trade list. Your welcome to look at my trade list too.)

Hi Calliope, I know what you mean, but those plants that can be planted before frost date usually can take frost easily. My nasturtiums, e.g. went through a few snow falls last year with their beautiful leaves and flowers before they finally yielded. I agree that one must know his area well and know how to estimate (though we cannot be 100% accurate). For some annuals, I wait 2 weeks after our formal frost dates, then check the forecast for the next 10 days, and if it looks good I can plant them. For tender annuals, I might wait a little longer or start indoor. For half-hardy or hardy annuals, I can start earlier.

Yes theoretically they could be importing their seeds - but this is a traditional dish, which means it's probably really old, and back then, farmers didn't buy seeds, especially not across oceans, and especially not poor countries (remember, Haiti started off as a bunch of slaves who just finally managed to free themselves). Even nowadays I'm pretty sure subsistence farmers in poor countries propagate their own vegetables in their vegetable gardens the old fashioned way - they don't HAVE any money to buy seeds. For example, you don't see any traditional American or European dishes that involve cassava or winged beans or papaya or breadfruit or durian or passionfruit. I mean sure, there's pineapple upside-down cake, but that only came after canned goods and trains for shipping items became widely available, and back in the early 20th century America was one of the few countries that had these economic/technological resources. Oh and you're right that daylength changes are important, but just plain old weather gradually getting colder until there are frosts will induce dormancy followed by flowering in temperate plants. Remember, even in tropical countries it can get cold up in the mountains (like the Andes - where the potato comes from originally) I'm guessing that maybe if you just leave the beets in the ground long enough they'll flower. They may not have that winter to induce them, but nature isn't stupid - EVENTUALLY you've GOT to reproduce. Maybe in like 10 months to a year or more they'll just eventually finally flower, winter or no winter.

For herbs, you're fine on nearly all of them. Just know there's the fast growing annuals that are good to direct sow (basil, parsley, cilantro, etc). Plenty of time for those, in fact it's just now getting warm enough for the basils. Cilantro is a semi cool season plant--you'll get lots of leaves to start with, but it will bolt to seed pretty quickly here too as soon as it really heats up. Then, just collect the coriander seeds! Then there's your perennials: rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, lavender, etc. You can seed these in, but you won't get much of a harvest this first year on the slow growing perennials. Better off to buy transplants of them if you're not planning long-term. Most of the other herbs you're good on too, especially if you start with transplants: savory, sorrel, burnet, chives, etc. Another note: if seeding, some herbs can have a long germination period (30+ days) for things like parsley, oregano, lavender. Rosemary, marjoram, lemon verbena and other tender perennials will not survive winter here in most cases.

As others have said, try fall crops of the brassicas, lettuce and peas. Carrots are fine, you can make a couple more sowings with no problem (hail excluded!!) Try some chard for a summer leafy vegetable and/or beets for greens. They are related and tolerate heat. So does vegetable amaranth a.k.a. Calaloo.

You'd really be pushing the luck to do any of them except the Brussel Sprouts and carrots now. The BS will work with no problems but the peas, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce just won't tolerate the heat you have coming.

You could try a container of lettuce in the shade and get some most likely but fall crops of them IF you first frost date allows for fall planting will do much better.
