Reviving/pruning Buddleia and Eggplant
Comments (3)I have learned three things about buddleias. Their roots do get eaten by nematodes, but normally they do well in the ground for at least two years. They do better in pots as long as you water them correctly. They must be deadheaded. Finally, they do not like "wet feet." This would include very heavy soil, which normally isn't much of a problem in Florida. I keep buying them because the butterflies love them, but I put them in pots and after a while I get tired of watering them and then they decline. I have also killed a few by over watering. Slowly but surely I am being cured of this plant. What I have found to be much more successful and similar in many ways are the porterweeds especially the Stachytarpheta frantzii....a very large purple porterweed that blooms continuously throughout the year here in Central Florida. It will die back to its roots if there is a hard freeze, but it comes back nicely afterwards....See MorePruning of eggplants
Comments (3)Fellows, Thanks for the information. It may be conflicting, nonetheless, it's useful info and encourages me to search more. Quite a coincidence, one of the references in the website hank_mili suggested mentions U.P. Los Banos. I graduated from there. Dr. J. Deanon was my teacher. The name Dr. Opena sounds very familiar also. I have two sets of eggplants of different ages. The older ones, I did some pruning already following the practice with tomatoes. The younger ones, they are still very small, I won't prune and see how they will perform. I'd like to invite you guys to visit my website. Comments (6)Thanks everyone for commenting on having the baby! We have yet to take a photo next to my tomatoes that I was watering...no pun intended! But, I will get a photo standing there with him!! We had joked that I would "have him" in the garden, and with the 25 min. delivery, after I HAD to finish watering my tomatoes before going to the hospital, it almost happened! Funny! So.....do you think that planting early has caused my fruit to set early? Do you think that the tomatoes will stop producing earlier than last year being they are started earlier? I put my plants in on about...the first of May! Oh....I have some plants that I can not reach the top of.....should I just CUT the tops off before fruit sets up there and I need a ladder? It is rather comical!...See Moretomatoes to prune or not to prune?
Comments (20)I have never pruned a tomato plant. I believe every leaf does it photosynthesis thing and add to the growth and vigor of the plant. I think that pruning tomatoes got started with the commercial growerÂs years ago. They always plant determinate tomatoes and wanted to be the first to market with the largest/nicest tomatoes. They wanted the most $$ for there product and not interested in a sustainable yield. With a sustainable yield they are in competition with home gardeners who are no longer buying their tomatoes and they get minimum $$ for there effort. I am not talking about what the store wants for there tomatoes, I am talking about the farmer/commercial greenhouse owner and what they get.
