It depends on what you are using it for, the age and weight of the cat. Like many drugs, when you use it on a cat it is used "off label" or for a purpose other than what the drug was originally desiged for. The Ivermectin or Normectin or other brands are used to kill worms in cattle. If I remember correctly the drug is found naturally in the enviorment in another country and they found through trial and error that it kills parasites by neurological dissorder. The same can happen to an animal that is given an overdose. If you plan to give it to a cat or dog you need to use the injectable type 1% type. It will absorb through the skin somewhat but not as well as giving it subque or just under the skin with an injection. Our vet gave us the .1 ml or cc dosage for our cats to kill and protect the rescue cats from ear mites, hook worms, and round worms. I do not think that it works nearly as well for fleas as Advantage or some of the other specific flea type treatments. It does work for mange as we had a cat diagnosed with mange and we were given the prescription from a cat specialist vet .1ml per week for 5 weeks. The dosage for heartworms is much much less than the dosage for ear mites and worms. We never dose kittens or young juvenile cats with Ivermectin. We dose with 1% undiluted injected anywhere subque, with .1 ml for adult cats, then repeat in exactly 15 days the same dosage. You can use the ivermectin topically in the ears which is the most absorbable place on a cat. It will kill the ear mites but may not absorb well enough for to take care of parasites such as roundworms or hookworms. If you use it topically the dosage can be around .2ml per ear.(i have used it at this dosage in the ears on adult cats without any adverse side effects) I don't like the idea of injecting this under the skin of a cat and if I had something that was more natural that "I" have found that would work I would use it. But for now this works and having ear mites may seem like a small thing but cats will self mutilate themselves scratching and can get hematomas of the ear and they will never look the same after one. Hook worms and round worms are bad stuff so IMHO it is far better to treat with what works than take a chance on what could happen to a cat. All that being said there are products that work such as revolution, but it also has a ivermectin typ product in it.

I would NOT give my dogs the recommended dose on the Ivomec vial (.1cc/10 pounds) because that's for cattle. Dogs are not cattle. If you read Merial's information you will see that the dosage for swine is lower because swine are not cattle either. The concentration in Heartgard was designed for dogs, so I keep close to that dose, but am not overly concerned about precise accuracy because there is a lot of experience that shows mild overdoses are normally not harmful except for the breeds that have been mentioned. The precise dosage of Ivomec 1% for dogs is 0.0027 cc or ml per 10 pounds. This based on the concentration in Heartgard for dogs. I verified the concentration and dilution with a vet, a pharmacist and a chemist.

Ivermec should be fine for the minidonks-it's given to horses for de-worming. Cats-not my forte'. I do know specialty breeds can have allergic reactions to different meds-many years ago we lost several siamese when we lindaned (dipped) the farm animals like we did everyyear. The barn cats were fine. Apparently that breed was allergic to a med in the medicine. Thank fully we managed to save a few of them. Also check cat medications for active ingredients. Have no idea what the dosage might be-we were short-lived cat owners. Brendasue

Thank you all for your help. I did take my pet to the vet again and she gave me the correct dosage to treat the mange on my pet with the ivomec. It started working right away, and Frankie is doing much better. Thanks again.
