Ivomec Dosage Clarification
Comments (2)I totally understand your confusion... I spent a month reading everything I could so that I could understand......and yes, there are several different beliefs on the topic..and the truth is that none are absolutely wrong. Those that extend the Ivomec are reducing its level of active product but still based on the dosage given in the name brand heartworm preventatives, they are within range.... those who do not use extender are not overdosing their dogs, they are indeed giving a larger portion of active ingredient but fortunately due to the nature of the active ingredient, there is a large error for margin so to speak.... I know I am not clearing things up for you more, but all the different opinions you have read are all correct and within range for providing the coverage necessary. Originally, the vets that would recommend the Ivomec to pet owners were those located very rurally and prescribed it for both price point and higher level of coverage due to the fact that most dogs in those regions were in a higher level of exposure due to their lifestyles.... of the research I have done, most of the vets who prescribed and approved the use of the product recommended the un-extended product at .10 cc /10 lbs body weight. You can also find info on the Merck website that substantiates these recommendations.... those using extenders are still administering dosage capable of protecting their animals , it is just that the higher dosage is also within safe margins..... You will hear those who swear by either one way or the other so for my own sanity and understanding, I spent the time checking with the 'experts'..... have you posed the question to your own vet? Mine personally does not condone the use of Ivomec..... but her main reasoning was that not everyone was capable of calculating the formulas correctly.... so in good conscience, she felt it best not to suggest or pass along any specifics.....suffice it to say, she did say that the same active ingredient as the name brands so it was not harmful if used correctly. Good luck in seeking your answers... I am sure many others will follow me with their experiences....See MoreContinuing of Ivermectin Thread
Comments (30)Just a note: PLEASE be aware of the decimal point in these various concentrations of Ivermectin. I have yet to use this method, but I am attracted to it because of the immense savings and because I feel manipulated and exploited by the vets and manufacturers for them to be charging as much as they do for the regular heart worm preventative. Do they think we won't know it is important if it isn't 120.00 for six months? Do they not realize that on many budgets this prevents rather than ensures dogs being treated? That being said, the dosage is tricky if you are not familiar with the divisions of a cc, percent concentrations, etc. I urge you to contact your vet regarding the dosage. If your small animal vet is uncooperative try your local large animal vet, they are usually more familiar with the livestock products anyway and every farm usually has a dog. The dosage difference between a .08% sheep drench and a 1% injectable concentration is 12.5 TIMES the concentration of ivermectin. That would be like you taking 25 aspirin! The 1% solution cannot be easily measured/used for average sized dogs without dilution by propylene glycol. Do not use water, as the ivermectin will not evenly disperse, making an accurate diluted measurement impossible. Higher doses are prescribed for things other than heartworm preventative, i.e. mange, etc short term. But though a fairly safe wormer, Ivermectin's function is as a neurotoxin and I would not want to habitually expose my dogs to that higher dose. A good dosage explanation is available here http://www.dogaware.com/health/ivomec.html This link's dosages were well in line with those given to my by my vet. Mine were a little lower because they were calculated for the exact weight of my dogs, (something else I like about doing my own dosage). It also addresses the collie sensitivity. Good luck and be safe....See MoreDetergent with FL washer Tide Persil Dosage etc?
Comments (6)Jmith, "So Tide liquid states 1,2,3 depending on load sizes so you are saying I should always use up to level 1 or less?" If you're doing a small load, #1 would be best not lower. Using less will not suspend oil and dirt to be flushed down the drain but ends up on the outer tub and gasket allowing mold to grow! Not only that, soils in the water will redeposit on clothing making items look dingy, dull or gray. "What you are suggesting is start low and check for slippery water during wash?" Yes! Always adjust detergent usage according to load size. You do not have to do this with every load. By your 4th - 6th load, you will know the balance of clothing to detergent ratio without re-washing! As for dosage for Persil? I have no clue because I've never ordered or used this detergent. Tip: If you are using Normal Soil Level and need to add more detergent do so after 5 Min's.. Pause machine and add detergent through the door and change Soil Level to Heavy to add more wash time. Here is a link that I've posted back in 2009 for proper suds level. Comments (51)Diplomatic Baggage by Brigid Keenan had to go back to the library with one chapter still to read. "No you cannot keep it any longer, it is wanted by a member of a reading group." I think Keenan has written another book so maybe I'll be able to check the goings-on of her husband, AW the EU Ambassador and her two totally wild and badly behaved daughters (expelled from even the most liberal UK schools). Once the book got away from the 'present' . . . being spent in some ex Russian satellite state and went back to BK's meeting her future husband the book perked up and there are several amusing incidents around the world, from Trinidad, to Belgium, then India, to the Gambia; plus stops along the way. The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball recommended by Woodnymph/Mary is the story of the first year spent on a run-down farm in up state New York by an ex-journalist and her new-found green-age farmer. It seems amazing that they could take on 500 acres of gone-to-seed land plus a rat-infested house and collapsed barns/sheds/outbuildings, work the land using only horse power, learn to milk cows, castrate calves/pigs, set up a local organic co-operative to sell their produce, plan a romantic wedding and still have time to write a book. It makes me tired just reading about it. The only criticism is that the book is over-long and KK could have thought of a better title....See Moreceasar_gibbs
