Pygmy goats generally run 35-50 lbs for the doe and 40-60 lbs for the buck.

They generally live less than 12 years.

I am glad to hear that your dogs get along with the goat. I do not own a dog, but whenever one comes into the yard the goats get upset and will butt the dog. Good thing no large dogs have come over recently. My goats are Nigerian Dwarfs and would be no match for a large dog.

Reese sounds like a very special boy you have there. Not sure if your aware of a condition that can effect male goats of any breed. Its called urinary calculi and its a very, very serious condition if they should happen to develop the problem. I to have some special pet goats in my life and I have had 3 that required sugery due to the urinary calculi blockage before I learned the signs and how to most prevent it.. You might already be aware of the condition and take caution in how you feed little Reese but if not please do a google search on URINARY CALCULI and read and learn how to possibly prevent the condition. Its so sad when people that aren't aware of the problem and their beloved pet goats develop the problem and sometimes its then to late for the treatments or surgery. I have used ammonium chloride as a top dressing on all my goats feed and I also limit the amount of feed given to my wethers. This is for anyone out there that has male goats please learn the signs and what can help to prevent the urinary calculi blockages in male goats. I have 7 pet wether's and they are so sweet and loving, more so then my girls, but all are loved so much. My oldest will be 12 on May 6th and his name is Bubby and he's a wether and has been since he was 4 months old. Genny maybe you already know about the blockages but there are possibly others that don't and thats the purpose of this message. Sandy, I had never heard of that! Thank-you for telling me. I will be very careful. Reese is so adorable--my neighbor has had goats for ever and I've always wanted one. Reese is so sweet. but, thanks again for telling me about URINARY CALCULI . Do you think it will help that I got Reese neutered?

Little Reese will be such a much better pet if you have him neutered. Intact Billy's aren't something you want as a pet, they stink to high heaven and have one thing on their mind. I highly recommend you get little Reese neutered. The age thats best to have him neutered would be around 3 to 4 months of age. I have done some of mine earlier then that with good results. I would not band any goat over the age of 4 months. Banding is very painful for them at any age and takes so long for it to work. I also have all mine dehorned with the method of burning the horn buds.
I have currently 7 wether's that range in age 3 years to 12 years and I have neutered them all using either cutting, which is surgery and my vet preformed the surgery for me and I have also banded several, which was the first and last time I will use that method. I have also used the burdizzo method which is the method I would most recommend. Its not painless, put it is the easiest and the quickest method for neutering them. You must find a vet or someone that's experianced in performing the procedture. He would be a little stiff for the first couple days unlike if he's banded then he will be in somewhat pain for a couple weeks. Check out the link above and make your decision which you feel would be the best, but please take cautions concerning the urinary calculi. I really hate to see people with male pet goats have to deal with the emergency once their beloved male pets goats has the blockage and then trying to find a vet that can treat the problem which it isn't easy to find a vet that's willing to treat them which most offten will require surgery and in short order if the goat is to survive. Its so much easier to prevent then to treat once it developes. I have never owned a billy I just lease one when I decide to raise kids, which isn't every year. I raised babies in 95,99 and 2003.

Sandy, I already got him neutered! I got him neutered a couple days after we got him. He is over the soreness now--I think.
Our vet we use for our dogs and cat has a husband that is a vet for farm animals. He neutered for us.
I also got his horns removed. They said that it wouldn't be as painful if we went ahead and did it while he was young. The vet did all that for only $45. He was really nice. And, the way he did it was by burning them off, they didn't cut them off or anything like that!

Reese is doing really great now. We run with him in the yard and he will chase us and play with us! The reason we got his horns removed was because we have 3 small dogs. We didn't want him to grow horns and oneday be playing with our dogs and accidentally jab one into the dogs...so I think doing that was the best thing to do.
