Using manure in the garden

I am just starting to use the chicken manure from the coop in my garden (flower). I've read so much about it being "hot" that I thought I needed to compost it for 6 months to a year so it wouldn't burn my plants.

However, I have yet to see any of our grass being burned by the direct droppings (unlike our dogs). Is it because their feed is vegetarian? They do free range during the day so there are bugs and such in their diet. Anyone have further insight?

I haven't applied it yet to the veggie garden as I'm unsure if it's safe (until it breaks down more).
