Water Ponding Issue

My rear yard slopes down from right to left. Therefore the house to my right is upgrade from me and the house to my left is downgrade from me.
My neighbor to the left has installed a 2 by 12 lumber barricade on about 100 feet of our shared property line. He has mulch built up against the barricade with plantings on his side. My issue is that when it rains hard, water ponds up on my side and creates a swamp like effect for my side of the property which includes plantings and a grass area.
It's very annoying that he has done this but I just moved in and I don't want to create a stir.
If I drilled one inch holes every foot into the lumber, would that help me? If I raised the lumber up Ana inch and shimmed it, would that work better? Any other ideas. Thank you in advance for your responses.

You have to address it with the neighbor. He is sticking it to you and you are worried about upsetting him? It is not legal to create a dam so water builds up on your neighbor's property. If you do nothing it makes it easier for him to say that it was always like this.

Hey Andy. You will likely get more responses on the United Kingdom version of this forum. They seem to have more over there than we do here, but I'll give a try to a few possibilities. You don't say how the clay was compacted or if any Montmillorite (Bentonite) clay was used. If there was an inclusion (a different type of soil or roots) that could easily be where the leak is located. We just had a discussion about puddling clay on this forum a few weeks ago for a pond and much info came from sites about Dew ponds in the U.K. One of the most common locations for leaks was the top edge of the pond which could act as a wick if it was not constructed properly. I never had much luck with using dyes in the water to find a leak. It mixed much too quickly. One material I have found useful was a handful of fine, dry, powdered clay scattered on the surface. Calcium Bentonite is quite good for this since it can be purchased as a fish tonic or cosmetic base as well as a construction material. If the water is reasonably clear it should work well for you. If not, it needs rethinking. Some one suggested dry milk powder to me. I didn't try it but it sounded reasonable and would be inexpensive. The Bentonite should be available at home and garden supply stores or through a well digger, which is where I found it. The added advantage is that the Bentonite can be used to seal the leak when you find it. I use blue dye in my pond. The kind I use also has beneficial bacteria. You can adjust the degree of blue color- it's best to add some to a bucket of water, then add the water to the pond. You can repeat this until you get the color you like. The first time I used the dye, I didn't do this and made the water very dark. My pond is clear, and I can still see my fish. The color gradually fades within 1-3 weeks until it is no longer noticeable. The color is most noticeable in waterfalls.

Right off the bat I'd say your filtration is inadequate, and you may have a lot of dead plant material rotting in there, which is bad for water quality. Generally your turnover (amount of water going through filtration system) for 9K gallons should be at least 4500 g/hr. More is better. You need bottom drains and serious filtration for Koi. Koi are very dirty fish and even with no koi your pond doesn't sound very good right now. They are a big step up from goldies so get your pond right first and talk to koi people before getting even one koi. Filtration consists of: --mechanical (for fish poop, leaves, etc) --biological (a place for a large number of ammonia andnitrite eating microorganisms to grow and remove impurities from the water) --fines (a bead or sand/gravel--one for ponds, not a pool type--filter for removing tiny particles that the mechanical filter doesn't get, such as dead algae) --UV (to kill off floating algae that green up the water) Although some filters can provide more than one type of filtration, they are all best at one particular job. A separate mechanism for each phase is a good idea. In addition to filtration, plenty of aeration, especially in warm weather. Warm water holds less oxygen then cold. A foam fractionator is a plus, but if the mechanical filter is highly effective, a foam fractionator can be necessary. Start reading and researching. There's a lot of information out there, much of it contradictory! You have to keep reading and learning to know what is going to work for you. Joining a koi or pond club is also a great way to learn. You can meet some very experienced people who will not agree with each other on how to do things. But learning from them why they do what they do and what their knowledge is based on is enlightening. The more you know, the more satisfaction you'll get from your pond and the healthier it will be.

Hi Newguy Well do I need to say that overstocking is your major problem. Ok this is what you need to do. Right now changing your water is the only thing that has not killed everything. Tell me what kind of filter you have. Continue using rain water if you can, the high amounts of lime will drive your PH crazy. Also if you plan to do a bigger pond, Make sure you do not use any Lime rock in the pond. Start out by testing your rain water PH, here in Pennsylvania it is usually around 6.5. If you are able, add a air bubble to your rain water harvest and attempt to keep debris out of the water. A simple air stone will cause some circulation. Do not get water from a lake, you will be bringing what ever parasite is in the lake into the pond. Second, Never use any item that will make the Ph go down like an acid. Pick up a Kh test kit, Kh or Total Alkalinity is a buffer that prevents massive ph swings. In the day your plants are pumping out CO2 with photosynthesis. At night they stop and your Ph would crash if not for the buffers provided by Total Alkalinity. This is why when you add a ph down it only lasts for a few days. However, if you add enough of it, you will wipe out your buffer completely and crash your Ph. Ever hear of people waking up in the morning to find a pond full of dead fish. Or, when the ice completely thaws. This is what to do....buy a large bag of Baking Soda. Yes, baking soda is a base, but Baking Soda is your best friend. Start doing 25% water changes every few days for a week. You need to restart your pond. Every day dissolve a fourth cup of baking soda in a gallon of water and pour it into the pond. Try not to get it directly on the fish. Baking soda will only take your Ph to a max of 8.6. Anything above that it will slowly lower your Ph. Plus Baking Soda is how you build up that precious buffer. 8.6 ph is fine for koi, a little high but its ok. After the week, dissolve the 1/4th cup after your water change. If you have heavy rains, add another 1/4th cup...it wont hurt them. Think about either upgrading your filter or donating a koi or two. Another tip, if you have a waterfall, get a bag or crushed seashells from your pet store. Put them in a woman's stocking, rinse it really well, then place it somewhere where it will get good water flow. This will also stabilize your PH. Agree with laag. The neighbor cannot impede the natural flow of water draining from your property. The longer you wait to act in doing something about this, the more difficult others may make it for you. Start with the friendly chat, but don't hesitate to go to municipal authority or a lawyer if you don't get results. Don't try to solve this by "drilling holes" or similar. It won't work as a long term solution.

If it were me I would address it with the neighbor in a friendly collaborative way.
If the board was not there the surface water would be sheet flowing down to his property.
If you both chipped in for a trench drain, assuming that the grade is working with you in a positive slope and there is a place to exit the water to then both properties would benefit greatly. win win for both property owners.
Right now it is a win - lose situation and not very neighborly.

It is completely normal for sheet flow to cross property lines. Each downhill neighbor deals with it (usually by doing nothing.) As long as one does not concentrate water and dump it on his neighbor, there shouldn't be a need to be concerned. It's not being a bad neighbor, but just allowing a natural phenomenon to occur.

"...because I have a strong sense this guy is gonna dig his heels in." If you have this belief and don't protect your property rights, it's likely the neighbor will make it more difficult as time passes. 1" holes will be worthless in a heavy rain storm.

Buddy, over my career I have consulted with a number of folks whose neighbor screwed them re: water movement/drainage and they're trying to fix it while tiptoeing around Mr. Selfish. What happens is the cheap fixes (like 1" holes) fail like a coked-up high school football player in an AP exam and the expensive fixes, they're not willing to do. So they suffer, they deal with it, and eventually they try to sell and it becomes a liability for selling (god help you if it rains before a showing).

So in short, your neighbor? F*** that guy. He was being completely selfish and unreasonable to do what he did. When my neighbor behind me regraded their lot when their basement wall collapsed (should never have allowed a house there, there's an underground spring behind the wall) and I got 6" of standing water in my yard, I made two calls. One to the property owner, who told me to bite it; and one to the town, who made him fix it. Boom. Done. Problem solved.

oh and d-d is an amazing goddess of design but I'm going to disagree here. Why should you have to dig into your pocket? If the homes are part of a subdivision there was probably a site plan filed with the county that showed surface flow through the backyards to a lower drain/drainage area. He's the one who decided to subvert that. Let him fix it on his own.
