Best method for coffee grounds?

Hi,

I'm a first year gardener who is starting out with a small vegetable container garden. I have leaf lettuce, scallions, basil, mint and parsley. So far everything is going well, but I understand there is a danger with nitrogen getting "washed out" from the soil (I mixed pro-mix in a 3-1 ratio with mushroom compost) whenever the plants are watered. My husband drinks massive amounts of coffee, so I'd like to put the leftover grounds to work.

There seem to be two main methods for using the grounds: either mix them into the soil or dilute them and use them to water the plants. Does anyone have an opinion on which way works best or are they both pretty much equally effective? Thanks in advance for your help.
