Comments (8)It all depends on how desperate you are to see a flower and where you are in the orchid hobby. It is all there in the past threads. The other day the lady next door asked me to tidy up her Phal. which had been in bloom for something like 2years. I think it is an equestris hybrid because the flowering parts were much branched with many scars where past flowers had been. There was one flower at the end of many branches and there were indications that it was about to form more side branches. SNIP Heaven forbid, but some readers might want to show their orchids one day. Here is a benching at an orchid Society meeting. Those hard hearted Orchid Judges in Australia take into account the number of flowers on the raceme and how those flowers are arranged. Probably something similar happens under AOS Judging. Here is a picture of a miniature flowering Phalaenopsis Hybrid that would only have two or three flowers open at the time. Note the flower scars on the stem to the right. I would let it flower for about three months before cutting the spike off at the base. This is what happens if you cut to a node and then cut to another node and so on. Comments (29)It's OK, Harborose, I did chuckle at your jest and I have been victimized by thieves. Let's not lose our sense of humor here, please. After all if we can't laugh surely we'll be crying. And I hate when that happens! My brother wants to get security cameras for the yard. For several years now, besides the roses being stolen, we've had our apple trees stripped clean of fruit either at night sometime or when we weren't at home for some reason. We use those apples for cooking all winter long and were very upset by the thought that someone climbed, and we think shook, the trees to get every last one down. The shaking is bad for the trees and my fear is some idiot will fall and then have the gall to sue us! We're pretty sure they went as deer bait no less because we've had several guys stop and ask if they could have them for that purpose. I really missed my applesauce, baked and apple pies the first year. Since then we've been trying to pick them earlier. Comments (10)Wow. That is what I would call leggy. I can tell you that the tibouchinas that are dotted around the office park where I work in Menlo Park are cut back hard in early Winter if they suffer any early freeze damage. These are all planted close to buildings. The gardeners whack them very near to the ground, just leaving a few sticks in a vase shape, kinda like you would prune a rose bush. There is one just outside my window which is very thick and bushy (5' x 5') with a few flowers on it now. This one they did not need to prune at all. I like to think it is growing so well because it is outside MY window, but I'm sure the site and exposure (south & west) is the determining factor in its vigor and shape. See what others say, but I'm thinking you whack yours back hard. Maybe just above where the trunk branches, cut back the side branches hard and the trunk too.
