I don't make any money, selling only a very few birds. If I tried there is a fortune one could make with chickens. It is a hobby. Last year 3400 chicks-young cockerels and pullets and older birds that are culled (removed) from my breeding program were given to 4-H members and to children under 10 years old. Many of the meat birds and eggs are quietly given to people that have limited funds. I have done well with investments and have no desire to make it into a business, that takes all the fun out of it. If it were up to my wife, not one single bird would ever leave us. She gets so attached it is hard to part with any, besides she has her cats (16)-all are getting up in age and require a lot of time to clean up after and give attention to.

By no means am I claiming to be an expert on this subject, but we had a cancer scare 3 years ago with our cocker which prompted me to do the research that led me to cook for him, which I've been doing ever since. So I will share what I do. I usually cook a batch of stuff on Sunday afternoons, I alternate a beef or a chicken batch so that I can have both on hand, (he likes variety). I'll usually brown and then braise the meat, then add veggies which may include any combination of carrots, brocolli, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts and legumes. I sometimes buy a large bag of mixed vegetables, (no onion of course) and add that for convenience. Before I add the veggies I remove the meat and cut it up into small bites, this is easy at this point because it is very tender, certain cuts of beef take longer to get to this point. When the whole thing cools off I separate it into small disposable containers, (which I don't actually dispose of) and put in the freezer so that I can easily reach in for a meal and pop it in the microwave on defrost. In addition to these meals he gets chicken liver with brown rice every Friday night as he tends to run anemic. As you can imagine he LOVES this. I'll make a 1 cup batch of brown rice then put it in a gallon size ziploc bag, then flatten it out and use a ruler to make approx 3x3" perforations, the freeze it. When I want to add some brown rice to his dinner I can just take it out and break off a square. He is 14 and doing just great, still chases squirrels and jumps up onto his ottoman with no trouble. He never has accidents in the house and never exhibits any adverse reactions to this diet in the form of diarrhea or irregularity. Unfortunately being a cocker he has had his share of ear problems over the years and is now deaf. His ears have been the biggest challenge by far. I also try to add a capsule of Thorne immugen to his food a few times a week in order to support his immune system, and I give him no-sodium tuna from time to time so he gets his omega 3, 6 & 9. He gets Nature's Variety Raw Instinct or Nature's variety freeze-dried chicken and turkey medallions for breakfast which also provides the omegas. The medallions are VERY expensive though, so he doesn't get it every day. I am fully aware that I spend more time and money on my dog's diet than many are willing to commit to, but I have no children so I don't mind and the results are worth it to me. Chicken and rice alone is not a balanced and complete canine diet. The most dangerous problem with that diet is calcium/phosphorus imbalance, which can lead to nutritional secondary hyperparathyrodism which causes bone loss. If not corrected, that diet could also lead to life-threatening hypocalcemia causing muscle tremors, seizures, coma, and death. There are other nutrient imbalances as well, but that is the most dangerous. Also despite what the pet food manufacturer's say, variety is the spice of life for dogs too. Changing the meat source and carbohydrate source every once in a while (I do it every 3 months or so) ensures a better mix of nutrients. If you are going to be making food at home, which I encourage, please do some research on it. Dr. Pitcairns' Natural Health for Dogs and Cats has some good recipes. There are recipes online. Chicken and rice is fine in very short term when trying to encourage a dog to eat, or when it has an upset stomach. But it is not a long-term diet. Glad the incontinence stopped and she gained her weight back. It's great that you're willing to make her food to keep her healthy. Just do a little research and get a good recipe. Dr. Pitcairn's basic Doggie Oats (modified by me to make things easier) 5 cups raw rolled oats (about 11 cups cooked) 3 pounds (6 cups) raw whole, ground, or chopped turkey 1/4 cup veggie oil 1 cup cooked veggies 10,000 IU Vitamin A (optional if using carrots) 400 IU vitamin E 1 adult multivitamin, crushed About 5-6 grams calcium supplement with phosphorus in 2:1 ratio- bone meal is good Bring 10 cups water to boil. Add oats, cover, and turn off heat letting oats cook for 10-15 minutes or until soft. Then combine remaining ingredients and serve. Yield: 18-19 cups, 230 Kcal/cup Ration in cups: toy breeds 1-2 cups; small 4 cups; medium 6-7 cups; large 8 cups; giant 9+ cups. You can substitute different meats and grains for variety. I follow the whole30 meal template and eat dinner leftovers in the morning. Based on your posts, you don't seem to have a real understanding of what low carb is. I recommend choosing a low carb plan And following it until you really understand low carb eating. The most basic would be Atkins (the early one- referred to as Atkins 72.) You should be able to pick up a used copy for just a few bucks.
