Mixes are a bunch of stuff thrown together. I do that sometimes but most often the best way to garden is to plan what we want and just buy plants. Yes it costs a little bit more to buy an already growing seedling or sapling, but it is a lot more likely to succeed. With seed mixes: if we sow outdoors we have less control over what we get or how it is laid out. But.....sometimes the results are spectacular. We had a large bush breaking up a front planter and upon taking it out: just planted some Plantation Products wildflower mix and have a few pretty clusters of Chrysanthemums, Daisies, Poppies, and Cornflowers. Cant say that I am not pleased. The real problem with the mix is that not all of the plants have the same needs for soil, water or light and the downside is that we tend to care in a way that only favors some of the plants which thrive while others just do not survive. Of course the advantage is that we can get a wider variety of color and blooms during more of the year with minimal effort. I suggest that everyone try a mix at least once (if not a few times) early in gardening and see what you get. Even though I have done them before, I still enjoy a mix sometimes. It is a fun way to learn flowers and plants that we otherwise might not try and it is also fun to be the only one on the block with certain colors or types of flowers. I grow flowers to supplement beauty of our home and as a bonus to give the bees in the area some variety and desire to come visit our herb garden! (We spoil the bees at our home).

Paula, Thank you for the offer but I don't collect gobs and gobs of seeds. I just collect a few seed heads of things I think others might like to grow and a few for myself for the next year if they are annuals. I shouldn't say this here on the garden web but I toss most seeds in the trash as I am cleaning up my gardens ( take a deep breathe, stop gasping...lol). I think this year I will collect more than usual because I feel like a cheap skate when I see some of the other seed packets in swaps...lol I have added the petunias to your gift package and again, thank you for the offer. What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage.
