Dominique: chicken tractor plans
Comments (3)Jonathan, Sorry. Try www.essortment.com/chickentractor_rjpo.htm or Google on chicken tractor and it should be the third listing that comes up. Hope this works!...See Morechicken predators...can chickens be safe?
Comments (67)My son has chickens, 16 I believe, he has lost a few to predators, they are out of their pen during the day, but the other day he lost the pretty rooster, golden polish, he had won in a pet contest and blue ribbon at the fair. The neighbors dogs escaped their pen and they were awakened by the indoor dog barking his head off, this was 6 a.m. dog inside the pen, it was covered in that chicken mesh stuff, now covered in the heavier wire. He has cochins, a blue silkie (rooster), domineckers, white crested polish, two kinds that came from rural King that I don't know what they are, but they keep to themselves, I would get chickens too, but we have alot of dogs going through as well as all the other varmits..hope you enjoy yours as much as we have theirs....See MoreChicken Tractors if you put on wheels how big
Comments (3)I'm sure there is probably a "right" answer to your question, but I'll just provide my best answer. I currently have 3 chicken tractors and the wheels are old lawn mower tires (little hard rubber jobs about 8" or so). It cost me $2.00 for a carboard box of them, so I wasn't going to sweat the details. Simplicity is your friend in this case. Larger tires would roll easier, but you are still restrcited by the gap at the bottom. A gap wide enough to roll over rough terrain will allow chickens to escape. Too small a gap will catch on every little hump. I keep mine about 2" at the back. Seems like a good compromise for my pasture. The chickens have never gotten out, but it still rolls OK. For axles I just used lag bolts and several washers to allow the wheels to spin. You can only move as fast as the chickens walk, so don't get crazy with this end of things either. In fact I built my first tractor before I had the lawn mower wheels, and I used a 6" hole saw to cut 3/4 plywood discs. I planned to replace them with lawn mower tires, but they work so well I haven't done anything yet. Good luck. Hope this helps. Russ...See Morechicken tractors
Comments (7)I too faced the critter factor since I live on the edge of national forest in the North Carolina Black Mountains -- hawks, owls, foxes, etc. I elected to build a stationary chicken house with a fenced run that has a roof and then just let the chicks run around in the yard now and then for fun. The wind was as big a concern as critters -- our wind storms would certainly topple anything light..and a heavy chicken tractor (as someone else pointed out) is a challenge to move... The roof turned out to be the best thing b/c it keeps the bedding dry in the run and we have a lot of rain. Then I built the whole thing within the larger 'lot' fence so our dogs kind of patrol too. I've found fox scat very near the chicken house, but after a year and half we had no losses. There's a picture of the chicken house at www.herwords.org/house -- it's red and white -- we call it the TajMaHen. But what's been great is the connection with the garden. I put down thick straw bedding (plus throw in grass clippings, leaves, yard clippings, garden thinnings and weeds, etc) The chickens beat any compost turner -- feathers down! The pulverize this stuff into tiny bits, season it with their poop and feathers, and then when I clean out the house every several weeks I make a compost pile out of it all. It composts VERY quickly and is incredible stuff! I clean it out often just to get the compost b/c due to the roof, it stays dry and has very little odor if any. It's a system I plan to do again when I move in the summer to the Arkansas Ozarks -- I hear I'll be able to use any amount of compost I can make on the thin soil! But I want to try a chicken tractor too. Does anyone know of links that picture different tractor designs? I'll go put up a better pic of my house on my website right now. :-) Here is a link that might be useful: the chicken house -- look for red/white bldg...See More- 15 years ago
