corner foundation plant for front of home

hello, I am in search of an evergreen tree to soften the corner of the house. It is a north facing exposure. I so had my heart set on a weeping alaskan cedar but don't think it would work out with light and space reguirements. The width is the problem. Perhaps something in the 8 foot in width range. Please tell me there is something other than arborvitae! Thanks

For a northern exposure - a nice specimen evergreen for a corner anchor would be a Blue Holly or Dragon Lady Holly. The Dragon Lady Holly is a narrower variety and the Blue Holly does exist in a 'Fastigiate' or Upright form which is more narrow. The Alaskan Cedar will tolerate lower light conditions and should not go past the 8'width you are looking for which is pretty wide but if you are looking for something a little more narrow go with the holly. Our house faces West and gets sun from 12 noon on. No trees in front only small plants. It is a narrow strip of planting area in front of our house about 4 feet wide from our house foundation to pavers for the driveway and parking area. The arbecola is doing well but I do not like the variegation colors playing off our house. The front of our house looks so blah and washed out. Dark green plants would look so much better. That's why I was thinking Green Island Ficus. I need something short or at least something that I can trim so our windows don't get covered. Something 3 feet or so. Am fearful of ficus next to the foundation even if it is a "slow grower" and not like the other ficus plants. But love its looks. Really need some guidance. Thanks!

I would not plant a vine next to brick if there is any chance it will dig into your mortar like ivy does. I will echo everyone else on photinas....they want to be huge. They make a great living privacy fence if you have lots of room. I keep swearing I will get a photo of the ones planted at my church building. They outgrew being kept trimmed, so they are now the hulking plants they want to be. Unfortunately they are blocking all the sunlight for the bed as well. Crepe myrtles are a really nice addition. If you don't want a tree size, you can find the miniature bush types. Also look into autumn sage / salvia. Both of those will give you some nice blooms when the spring blooms have pooped out.

Because of all the trees at the left side, you do not need to plant a tree at the left side of the house ... but you do need to unswamp the right side of the house from all the low hanging foliage of the tree there. It makes the house look gloomy and unkempt. I see you are planting a hedge across the front left side of house. This will be a chore to kept prune low or, most likely, it will grow to engulf the entire lower half of the house and the window. I would change it. The other notes are in the picture. ("Wraps corner" does not mean touching it.)

I also often use Blue Princess Holly. Another good one is Cherry Laurel (schipkaensis). My generatin has turned its back on yews, but a Capitata Yew is a great plant for this situation.

How tall is the house? If the plant can get sun once it gets to a certain height, there would be nothing wrong with getting a plant that won't perform optimally in shade but will survive. It will look good in the long run.

If not... well, my ability to process common names is at a low ebb today and I can't even think what a weeping alaskan cedar actually is. But there are indeed weeping conifers of many species that might perform here. I'm thinking the very narrow types of Chamaecyparis nootkatensis might work, such as Green Arrow or Van Den Akker.

That may be why my brain generated cultivars of it! I think I was having trouble being sure we weren't discussing the weeping ATLANTIC cedar, which is quite a bit less tolerant of shade :-)
