OH WOW I feel so stupid and relief at the same time,let me explain I just discovered that my plant got so huge that grew its way under the deck and there I found 2 squash that got never picked so they are on the hard side now "winter squash" so problem solve.My plants are monsters vines wondering why shebear mention a bush plant?,and it it pretty resistant to the ugly SVB and tastier than black beuty zucc.,Thakns any ways you guys.I do have other ? I started with 4 plants each black beuty and yellow straigh neck now I'm down to 1 of each due to SVB this morning I inspect them and they got my yellow straight neck it is hurful 'cause if full of female flowers,is there any way to protect them or to save the plant I will say is on stage 1 and they seem to atack the lower part of the plant.

Tatume is a very light, almost sweet squash that tastes like normal summer squash. They are open pollinated. I found that they really took off in the late summer/fall and were great when other squash gave into powdery mildew or squash vine borers. I never had a squash bug problem with them. They trellis very well and can be doubled back on themselves or allowed to take over the garden in fall as things wind down. I get my seed from Sand Hill Preservation Center. You should do allright with the parthenocarpic zucchini. A popular zucchini substitute is the Trompbocino, actually a butternut type but used when young like a zucchini. Less popular is the Cucuzzi, actually a bottle gourd type, but used when young as a zucchini substitute. While Tatume/Calabacita is a C.pepo, It does according to TAMU, have some resistance to squash borers. Biggest drawback to Trombocino, Cucuzzi, and Tatume is that that they have rampant vines that will run into the next county.

George, who posts here as MacMex, mentions Tatume fairly often as it has grown well for him. Other winter squashes we've discussed recently that show good tolerance to Squash Vine Borers and other pests are Seminole pumpkin (pumpkins are a subset of the winter squash family) is a native from the Florida Everglade area, and Trombocino Rampicante an Italian vining squash that can be used as a summer squash while young and as a winter squash if the squash are left on the vine to mature. Its perferred use is as a summer squash. Both exhibit outstanding resistance to SVBs. Butternut is another winter squash that is very tolerant of SVBs. The 'Tahitian Melon' squash offered at SESE is very similar to butternut but has a longer neck and good tolerance of SVBs. All of the above are usually available from many sellers including Baker Creek Heirloom Seed, Sand Hill Preservation Center and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. When selecting squash to grow, the ones that are Cucurbita moschata are the ones to choose for resistance to Squash Vine Borers. Other squash (C. pepo, C. agyrosperma and C. mixta) do not have the same tolerance to SVB damage. I rarely plant any winter squash anymore that are not C. moschata. With summer squash, I have better luck growing them under floating row covers to exclude the pests. However, you do have to hand-pollinate the squash because the floating fow covers exclude the pollinators. Or, you can grow them under floating row covers until they begin to bloom, and then remove the row covers for pollination. However, once the row covers are removed, the squash bugs, cucumber beetles and SVBs will attack the plants. I've never had SVB kill or even seriously set back Seminole Pumpkin and because of their very thick rind they will store for up to a year if cured properly and stored properly.
