The peas would need to be fully matured -- to the point where the pods are dry and brown -- to be sure of getting good germination. If you don't absolutely have to plant RIGHT NOW you can probably mail order seed. I got seed from Pinetree and Shumway in less than a week this month after placing my order online.

Pease are my favorite thing about winter. We eat every type of pea out there, but sugar snaps are the BOMB! My peas are starting to show signs of stress (PM and some leaves getting brown) so I know the end is getting closer, but they are still doing well for now and are over the fence by a couple inches. I did a late planting of both "Sugar Lace" snap peas and "Green Arrow" shelling peas, for a Fall crop. They were planted on July 17th, and the first shoots are breaking ground today, 7 days later. Full emergence should be in another 3-4 days. In my experience, sugar snaps need warmer soil than most other peas, to get good germination. I had several years of very poor stands when Spring planted, but have much better germination when planted in mid-Summer. I hope the pair of sandhill cranes that dug up my entire late corn planting doesn't return for the peas. They were just walking out of my rural garden when I drove up... one hour too late. :-0 The DW & I put up a fence today, which will keep out the deer & rabbits... but I'm not sure how much good it will do against pests which can fly!!!

Well, I think I have some answers. When I checked on things this morning I found 4 aphids on a pea stem. I squished them (I've read squishing them releases a chemical that signals the others to leave?). Then I said a nice word to the resident lady bug and continued checking on my garden. Then I noticed some on the ground, near the peas, squished those too. Then I shook my pea trellis and hundreds, maybe thousands started falling out of my peas. Obviously too many to squish. I blasted them off with a hose (mind you Sunday we had a horizontal rain storm that blew over my neighbors tree so I would have thought that would have blasted them off. I treated yesterday with a store bought insecticidal soap, but now I'm looking for other insecticide ideas. Help! This is only my second season vegetable gardening and last time I didn't have this particular problem! I grow conventionally, but obviously whatever I use needs to be safe to eat the peas. Of should I just pull them out and plant something else? When thy die off (hopefully end of May) I was planning on putting in pole beans, will the same aphids eat those?
