Raised beds: pics of construction with recycled scrap lumber

My wife and I decided to change the configuration of our main vegetable garden to one with raised beds and pathways. We wanted to do this as economically as possible, and since we always take pride in our ability to reduce, reuse, recycle, we created the new beds with scavenged scrap lumber that a local hardware store/tress manufacturing facility had thrown out. We gathered this wood about a year ago from their garbage bin, saved it, and used it to make the beds. The only expense we incurred was for the screws which I used to put the beds together. We expect the lumber to last a few years, and will add more to the top as it rots out.

First, I prepared the bed by tilling with a mantis tiller.

We then laid out the lumber pieces for the beds:

Illijana laid out the bed boards:

I screwed the pieces together:

We put edge pieces on the beds to keep the hoses out of the beds when hand watering:

The finished beds (with compost layer):

As you can see, two of the beds were done in one style of construction, but the center bed was done in another style to maximize the use of the scrap lumber we had. Hope you enjoyed the tour. All the best, Jim in northern coastal California
