I have done a trade with someone from Canada, and sent it with regular mail. It cost a little extra for me to send it from the states to Canada, but they sent thiers to me with US stamps. I believe we both recieved our packages. I know I got mine and did not hear that she/he did not get theirs. I have also done a trade to Taiwan and all I had to do was send it with extra postage. They did not say anything about having to fill out any extra paperwork.

Linda, I always use the forms, because they can tell its just not a letter, and I have not had any problems getting seed into Canada or any where else for that matter (Austrailia is a NO NO). On the other hand I have been told that we are not allowed to import seed anymore without permits. I have heard stories about bubble envelopes arriving without seed but with polite little notes from US Customs & the USDA. I have also heard a story about someone that imported some things without permits and inspection, they came and destroyed everything. I urge you to make sure everything you do is "by the book".

HI! I recently traded with a seed friend in Canada. I packed my seeds in a regular bubble envelope and brought it to the Post Office. I did not have to fill out a form. I was not asked what was in the envelope. Postage was a little bit extra. We both received our end very quickly. Maybe a day or two longer than a US trade. I would do it again. I like the idea of sharing a little bit of my garden with another country and vise versa.

It has always been my understanding that trading seeds is permissable as long as seeds are labeled with the botanical name, not their common name. Also, packets of seed should not contain mixed seeds, such as wildflower mixtures. I have never been required to fill out any forms, but that may be my particular post office. I've had trades in South America, China, France, & several Canadian trades. The only time I had a problem was with the trade to France, the envelope was checked, but because they were labeled correctly, they were shipped on & arrived a bit late. Another trade took an extraordinary long time, almost a month, but I was very pleased with that one. Of course, it has been a few months since I swapped, so rules may have changed.

I have sent 4 trades to Canada. Only one of them went without a customs form filled out. It is my understanding that if you indicate it is a gift of cleaned seeds, there is no problem.

The last 2 arrived the quickest...both were mailed on Christmas Eve morning with one arriving on Dec 31st and the other arrived Jan 2; previous swaps took much longer. I'm going to mail seeds to The Netherlands next week when my hubby is off and can get to post office...have someone who wants some of my Clitoria Blue Pea Vine.

Oh, I found the postage was less to Canada than within the U.S., I was able to return some of the $$ one sent me.
