'start seeds outside in the Fall'...when does that mean exactly?
Comments (10)Yippee: These specific questions are hard to answer. I know some folks do try to follow that kind of directions specifically. You could try to direct sow now if that is your preference. But remember that some seeds will wash away, some will be eaten by birds or other critters, etc. I just wintersow and try to keep it simple. I rarely read directions and most things germinate. Some don't, but most, by far, do. The beauty of wintersowing is it's simplicity. Mother Nature gives us temperature swings naturally, and waters the seeds for us with rain and snow. If I were trying to grow those things, this is what I'd do. Notice the first 2 need cold temps, followed by warm. Wintersowing will give you the cold temps, followed by warm when the spring weather arrives. For the Asclepias fascicularis, physocarpa, and syriaca I'd plant closer to spring, around March. If it germinates, I'd plant out and wait for bloom the next year. I'm not guaranteeing that this would work for you the way I mention, that's simply what I'd do. But that's just me, I try for easy. OK, maybe lazy. And I don't stress about it anymore. If someting doesn't germinate, I try again next year and have fun in the process. Can you tell, this will be my 4th year wintersowing. At first I worried and stressed over things, it's true. I think I've overcome that now. I know that most plants will drop seeds and they grow, as they have for thousands of years without our help. Comments (3)Frost tolerant plants are basically those that like to grow in cool weather and can survive freezing temperatures, like the greens you've mentioned. While they can survive frost without being covered, they will experience less stress and be happier if you provide some covering that will protect them from harsh changes in temperature. All the greens you started can make it through extremely cold temperatures. They winter-over in my hoop-house, surviving sub-zero temps and frozen ground. The key is to protect them from cold, dessicating winds and destructive freeze-thaw action using some kind of covering. In Zone 6, you should be growing cold hardy greens outside at this point. They would do well, covered with a row cover or other protective covering that can release heat on sunny days. Since you've planted your starts indoors, be sure to harden them off for a week or so before you plant them out -- they certainly won't be frost tolerant until they've had a chance to get used to outdoor conditions. Unlike the greens you're growing, many of the vegetables we associate with summer -- tomatoes, peppers, cucs, melons, beans -- are not frost tolerant and will sulk in cool temperatures. That's why it makes sense to take a 4-season gardening approach -- grow each vegetable in the seasons they like best. In other words, don't wait until Memorial Day to start your spinach!...See MoreWhat does 'dormancy' mean, exactly?
Comments (11)Yep, yep, yep to everything Bill said. When I first tried growing plumies I attempted to keep them going over the winter in a heated greenhouse. They still dropped their leaves. It was a response to the shorter days as well as temps. The following year I tried to keep a few going in the greenhouse by adding supplimental lighting. They kept growing but didn't look great and didn't do as well the following spring as the plants that did have a dormancy period. There are some evergreen varieties that retain their folige year round. Unless you have one of those varieties I think they do better when given a rest. We are in a severe drought with temps around 100 for the past month. I never water my plumies twice, or even once a day and they are in a very well draining mix. I soak them well every week or two and let them dry out between watering. I feed them every two weeks during the growing season and stop fertilizing about a month before they go dormant. I do water young seedlings more often. Karyn...See MoreWasher "only at Lowes"...?? What exactly does that mean?
Comments (8)This model seems to have good reviews. I'm between a new motor in my Kenmore TOP LOADER....repairman says my model is the last of the good TL's. Then if I decide to go new....do I stick with a top loader or make the jump to a front loader. One concern is that the FL are deeper than TL's and where my washer and dryer are located in my condo...they definitely will stick out further my current machines.. Sorry, I didn't realize this would come out sideways...You can see my current machines stick out...they are about 27 inches deep and the the Whirpool is 33 inches deep....LG models seem to the least deep of just under 31 inches...I may have to stick with a top loader.......See Moresunnibel7 Md 7
