But as Master Gardeners, it behooves us to remain aware of what can happen when plants escape the confines of our own backyards, and consider all the ways in which plants can be "invasive." Think purple loosestrife. Think ivy. Many people are now choosing not to plant Nandina domestica because it's turned out to like its adopted home in the Western hemisphere all too well. The State of Florida carries it in Category I of its list of plants that are invading and disrupting native plant communities. The introduction to their list states, This definition does not rely on the economic severity or geographic range of the problem, but on the documented ecological damage caused. The US Forest Service has classified Nandina domestica as a Category 2 threat in the forests of the southeastern regions of the United States. It is not on any lists here, yet, or at least none of which I�m aware. But Nandina domestica, as attractive and as useful a landscape ornamental as it may be, is in fact an invasive plant pest in some areas of the country. Proper berry management�a serious sounding version of "get them before the birds do" is suggested as a precaution. The single most important thing we can do as responsible stewards is to remain aware and ever mindful that what we do in our gardens and outside of them, as well has an impact on something else, somewhere. We're each of us responsible for making the most informed choices we can make. Me, I still have three Heavenly Bamboo plants in my yard. Well, it turns out Nandina is somewhat invasive in Tennessee according to TN-EPPC. It's listed as a level 2 invasive. I was surprised because I have never seen a seedling pop up where it wasn't planted. I frequently hike in a number of types of natural area and have never seen one growing wild in open areas or wooded areas. I also notice that it's one of the few plants listed on TN-EPPC's site without a distribution map. Most of the plants listed on TN-EPPC's list are literally all over the place. It may be that Nandinas are invasive in other parts of the state, or maybe they are just starting to show invasive potential here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Diggingthedirt, I want to address two things you wrote above. First, if a plant is invasive at a certain location, it would be very unusual not to see reproduction at that site over many years. I understand that it may be very hard to judge the invasive potential by only looking at a limited area or by only looking in a certain type of growing environment (i.e. a regularly mowed yard), but on a large farm with multiple types of growing environments (a yard, a hay field, unmowed/uncleared areas, flower beds, etc.) over a period of many years, it would be hard to imagine an invasive plant (invasive at that location) would not show considerable reproduction. Secondly, while reproduction from seed is the primary vector for many or most invasive plants to spread, it is certainly not the only factor. A plant's overall rate of increase in the environment has to be taken into consideration. Vegetative reproduction (i.e. suckering) is a factor in evaluating invasive plants. In my post above however, I was obviously not claiming suckering as a reason for thinking that Nandinas were invasive. The suckering I witnessed, while annoying in a flowerbed, did not rise to the level of invasive reproduction.

The aroma of cedar is supposed to disguise the smell of wool and other animal based fabrics so the moths won't lay their eggs in it and some versions of it might actually kill the larvae (which might have already been in the clothing when it was stored) but in general this is not a very effective way to protect your clothes. If you go the cedar route you should use as much Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar, Eastern Juniper, Red Juniper, and Pencil Cedar) as possible but be aware that it will lose its effectiveness as the oils dry out. Perhaps it's possible to buy the oil extract in a form that can be replaced.
