How Big is Big Enough?

Newbie question here - I've grown small amounts of veggies and herbs in containers for many years but have finally decided to take the plunge and plant a "real" vegetable garden. By mid-summer those plants have totally consumed my containers and I want more flexibilty. I'll probably use cinder blocks because I can control the height that way and keep the killer bunnies and my dog at bay. My question is what is the "right" size for a kitchen vegetable garden? I want more space than my containers, but I'm not looking to can vast amounts of veggies in the fall. I want something that will be manageable and not be overwhelming. It's only my husband and me and I'll share what I can't eat with friends and family.

Thanks!

Nancy
