mixing garden types (styles?) - good or bad?

How do people feel about mixing garden types. Not sure style is the right word but maybe it is.

Say the front yard is an English garden and you'd like to add a Japanese garden in the back. Or mix formal in one garden room and a wild medeow in another.

Note that so far the examples deal with very distinct rooms.

What if the 'rooms' are not completely separated. While in the meadow, you can see parts of the Japanese garden.

What about putting a Japanese lantern in a woodland garden? You might just like these lanterns and not have a Japanese garden.

If there are situations when it is OK to mix and have the finished product still be considered good design (artistic part of design)- what are they?
