let em run all about... unless they runnin on a surface that u walk on like driveway or a path.. other plants dont mind them infact sqaush and beans are companion plants. I planted 4 rows of corn and planted butternuts and spaghetti sqaush inbetween and pole beans near the corn stalks so u can imagine what my garden looks like.. its kinda like a mulch in a way.

Well thanks for responding but I suppose I have another
question. If they are growing inbetween the rows where I need to be walking for harvesting should I try and make
them grow more along the row they are planted? I bought
a rope type twine today seizel if I spelled that correctly
and was thinking of making a arbor or sorts from bamboo I
have and the twine for them to run on because the runners
are going everywhere. Will that work or will the squash be too heavy to run like that after it starts to get big?

"Spaghetti Squash Running Everywhere"... Well, CHAIN those suckers down before they run down the street! Put 'em on a leash! Nail their feet to the ... never mind. (I'm very visual)

They get pretty heavy, and would need sturdy supports. If it would not be a financial drain, and you have a feed store nearby, you might get a couple of hog fencing panels (see link below for visual). They are usually made from 1/4" diameter rods, welded together. Some are graduated like the drawing, and others are all the same size openings. Just get a package of cable ties (zip ties) and fasten them together to make a very sturdy trellis. Reuseable forever.

Don't be afraid to move the vines themselves, to guide them to where you want them to run... just think of them as octopus arms!

I grew them some years ago, and they ran across the driveway and up the wall around my mother's bedroom window. She did say it was a bit eerie to see the shadows of the vines moving in the night breezes, lit by the street light. She kept thinking of the 50s movie "The Day of the Triffids".

artist by trade so I am very visual as well!

oh yes those Spaghetti Squash figure they can go where they please,,,some of our gardens are protected from deer by fish netting,,,,,one year the spaghetti squash grew up the netting and did very well, you will need strong posts as they do get heavy, and they can throw a lot of shade if they are on a trellis.....growing them in the asparagus patch works well, they shade the weeds and do not interfere with harvest times. very good keepers and a very versitile veggy, a must grow for us every year.

You may need to make slings from fabric of some sort to support individual squash if the stems aren't strong enough.

Update on the spaghetti squash. I bought some of the ready
made tomato cages that form kind of a triagle. I trained
the vines up over those and inbetween. I went back out
there that evening and they seemed to be doning fine.
The slings are a good idea because with fruit already
coming on I was really wondering how I was going to
protect them with the weight. We will see how they do
if I loose them I have learned a lesson on where and
where not to plant them again. I was just too afraid to
leave them as my space for harvesting was cut to nothing.
