How long does diatomaceous earth last in the garden?

My strawberry patch. The first berries are ripening, and slugs have found each one. I have beer on hand for traps, but it's been raining so much that I don't think they'll be very effective as it's diluted and overflows the container.

So, I'll try something else. Next on my list of slug-weapons is diatomaceous earth to stop them. Will its effects last in the garden when it rains, or will splashes and water-puddling negate the effects of the sharp edges? (Never used it before, so I have no idea.)
