I know I don't complain too much but what does everyone think of on the first page of seed forum out of 30 posts 14 is one person looking for different items if I had posted last night my post would be on later pages not fair to everyone who posts once a week can,t it all get done in one post

I think this member has been over worked lately:( and I bet when she sees this she will post an apology :) and we will all forgive her :) because she will probably pull them all and consolidate them! ;) I have to stick my nose in after all the mistakes I have made!:)~Angie

Thanks for a wonderful opportunity for a displaced Peninsulan to have CA garden fantasies! I hope you're still checking this post. I think you've got good "bones" (the fence, the lawn, the gravel bed under the tree) and I'd be tempted to go BIG with the plantings in that most prominent bed in front of the fence: a nice big clump of tall cannas, let your Brug let nice and mature and lush in there, maybe a couple Melianthus, which has nice structural foliage. And/or I think if you let what you already have grow, you may find that it will eventually look more cohesive (new gardens rarely do, in my experience). If you're moving things around frequently, they may just not get big enough to get that finished, mature look. Lots of different, small plants are what give the effect you're calling, poetically, confetti. Repetition of the same plants, as well as large groups, helps create cohesiveness and tends to look a bit more natural than lots of different types. I personally think one can be pretty adventurous with color if you look carefully at how your colors look together. I happen to love red, chartreuse, and deep violet, for instance. Your eyes will tell you whether or not bubblegum pink petunias and rusty red marigolds work together. It's true, though, that too many different colors (which I DON'T think you have) give the effect the English, rather bluntly, call a "dog's dinner." Have fun!!

Difficult to assess from a single photo. Looks attractive from the shot's advantage point as posted, however. A simple solution to the "too busy" or "collector's garden" problem is to repeat one or two of the plants throughout the garden, especially ones that will be noticed b/c of size, color, or texture. Also, use a single edging plant to tie things together - like pots and pots of licorice 'Limelight' or nummularia or thyme or lavender, etc.

Brenda: Thank you! I don't have Betsy's book, but I have looked at it (I work in a library and got it through interlibrary loan). So this is why I thought that the upright plant was actually a different salvia. I have several of the sprawling transsylvanicas and so far only one upright one in bloom. But I have several plants that are getting ready to bloom and the foliage looks similar. I planted a lot of perennial salvias and don't know which ones will bloom the first year and which will not. But I did not plant that many transsylvanicas, unless some of the seeds were mislabeled. Any thoughts on what the upright one could be if it is not transsylvanica? Becky

I agree with Angie and with Patty at the same time. I think this person thought what she was doing was okay, and did not realize that she had bumped everyone off the front page. But she should have posted them all together, or else put everything on her trade list and said "take a look at all the new stuff I have on my list!"

Oh Becky! I completely agree with Patty as far as the result of this boo-boo,I really was in no way disagreeing with Patty.I really dont think the member really honestly knew what she was doing posting them all at the same time!:) Almost seems like something I would do...lol! This member has apologized before for little silly mistakes and I am sure she will do the same in this case,I know she likes it here and would never do anything intentional to cause a problem.I myself had to bump a thread of mine off page 2 after her posting spree!...lol..It's ok though! If Patty had not spoke up then maybe it would have happened again and again,I believe we all learn from our mistakes and we always need someone to point them out to us,if not we dont learn much! And like I said I am sure when she sees this she will make it right! Please dont anyone think my last post,or this one, was in any sort of disagreeable tone!
