People who received Echinacea tennesseensis from me

This is just a friendly reminder concerning the Echinacea tennesseensis that I offer.

Because it is an endangered species it is not legal to trade or sell plants or seed from this variety of coneflower unless you have received a permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. It is a federal offense to do so without a permit. You can give them away. I'm not sure how much they enforce the laws but I'm not taking any chances and I would advise everyone to do the same (CYA).

I have searched some trade list here and see that there are a few people who have this seed for trade. If you do have it listed you may want to state that these seed are for SASBE offers only and are not for trade.

I think this must only apply to people in Tennessee. I did my own research on this, and the fish and wildlife service's website has a publication about permits which says:

No permits are required for activities
involving seeds from artificially
propagated specimens of threatened
plants. However, seeds must be
accompanied by a label stating that they
are of cultivated origin.

Artificially propagated basically means that humans helped with propagating the plants (so the plants aren't growing wild). But the website notes that there are also state laws, so I'm assuming that's what Jim is referring to.

Thank you swisschard for the info. I plan on calling the number for my region and talking to them about this variety of coneflower.

I think we've all "been there, done that". We get so excited about trading for something we don't have that we trade off starts of new plants before we've even grown them. I've learned to be more patient now. I'm an avid daylily collector and it's important that my plants be accurately IDed before I trade them to someone else. So I don't trade my plants anymore unless I've seen them bloom (or grow) and took pictures of them and then researched them to be sure they were correctly IDed by the source from which I received them. So many of my first daylilies were misnamed. And I traded them under those names, disappointing other traders. But when you know better, you do better, right? Thank you for stepping up to the plate and owning your mistake. Cannas, one of my favorite plants, really are a nice substitution for a banana. Maybe your traders weren't too disappointed.

Jim, I did a search on it, and posted a link below. Lovely wildflower! While I don't really need that many, I suppose I could sqeeze several in around different places...and some may not make it anyway....and then may be able to share/give some at a 2007 swap meet. I'd be glad to send 4.05 plus 55 (or is it now 60) for confirmation in the form of stanps. I have read of some members who have sent plants out of the goodness of their heart b4 collecting the postage, just to never hear anything back from the receiver, and never collecting the postage spent. Why not offer them up on the Native Plant Exchange, and see if there are others interested in prepaying postage with stamps. Also, is there a forum that covers your state of TN?...like Ohio Valley Forum covers Indiana, and several others...you might post there...and of course there is the main Plant Exchange. Interesting comment, dbaron, about the pink poodle, elephant, etc. I tend to agree. I have to say that Hot Papaya and Guava Ice are now my least favorite Echinaceas. I was initially impressed, but now I find them just a little tiresome. Upon reflection I do prefer flowers that are more natural looking. Though Salsa Red may be my favorite Echinacea, the young plants of it that I've added this year all look like they've been raised on steroids, sort of huddled looking, all flower, little plant, no grace. Fortunately, the plants seem to outgrow that state as I don't like that very ungraceful look. As above, to me, it's not very natural looking.... I've made quite a hefty $$$ investment in Echinaceas this year and I'm finding that the Cheyenne Spirit series is about equal to any number of fancy named and fancy priced Echinaceas I have and, according to many, they do seem to be a safer investment as far as the potential to overwinter. Next spring should prove very instructive for me, and I hope I don't regret buying so many!

Well I did contact the rep for my region and she refered me to someone who is in Cookville, Tn. I was asking questions about artificially propagated plants and how they defined that term. Neither could give me a definite answer. I feel like I'm dealing with the post office when mailing Bubble Envelopes. They don't know their asters from a hole in the ground. They are suppose to get back to me.
