Designing in a hobby.

I had spent weeks this spring exploring the possibility of adding a garden railway to the garden. That was until I came to the conclusion that it was the mini forests I liked, not the train. I've been trying to think of ways to incorporate a miniature forest into the garden, but everything that I've been able to imagine so far wouldn't feel right in my garden. Hypertufa troughs won't look right, neither will dirt mounds rising out of the ground.

I think one of the most important aspects would be to have the right backdrop. I have a rock which has a concave side that would could work, except that it's length comes up short. I could flank it with other rock to frame the sides of the miniature landscape, but even if artfully done, do you think it would still look cheesy? Is there any other way I could work a little forest into the garden without it looking out of place?
