how often do you go to your local garden center?

I want to go every day LOL. I want to see if they have anything new and exciting. this is my local one http://www.northeastnursery.com/index.html love it!

LOL! I go every day!
In fact, I just got back. Everything there was so beautiful yesterday. Today? They have a really nice infestation of cuke beetles. Yuk. Glad I grow cukes from seed. They spread to the tomato starts, pretty much wiping everything out. I didn't know that those buggers liked tomatos too, and I managed to squish 3 of them.

I did buy a new yellow nozzle for my hose, tho.

I would want to go every day as well, for exactly that reason -- to see if they have anything new and exciting :)

I don't have the time though, and usually go about once a week, if that.

Somewhere above there was a mention of bean transplants and while it is possible to carefully do that it doesn't really work well... rhizobia aren't usually in the potting media and adding too much N to the biosphere will prevent them from colonizing and nodulating the roots. You will get foliage but no flower or fruit with all that excess N. The do sell soil innoculant, which i recommend adding to any new bed if you haven't got a compost bin to add your own microbes. It's not just the nutrients you need to worry about, it's the microbiome. Soil bacteria break down sulfur to lower the ph and allow micronutrients to be absorbed by root hairs. Others break down phosphorus and make it soluble for plants. Some fix N. Some just secrete enzymes that degrade oomycete pathogens like phytopthera. Some produce plant growth regulators and help with root hair growth and stomatal conductance. Others prime plant immune systems so they are able to defend themselves rapidly when pathogens attack.

-Sararock, Lol! I'm always calling myself a slacker when it comes to weeding and doing things I don't like in the garden! But moving plants is kind of fun so I don't mind doing that ;-) Technically, fall and spring are the best times to move things around. The cooler and usually wetter conditions make it easier for the plant to recover and re-establish itself than if it were moved in the full heat of summer. But I've never been one to follow rules ;-) It was last summer that I became fully annoyed with how the garden was looking, so decided to get things moved around right then and there! Of course, it was hot out and after I moved everything they started to wilt terribly and look as if they were on the brink of croaking. I was left scrambling to keep everything hydrated and even got out a big beach umbrella to shade a few plants, lol. But it felt good to get it all accomplished and everything came back nicely this spring. CMK

Is your local garden center 'up to speed' after the rains?

I've noticed that anything under cover looks great -- particularly at places where they grow their own material. Anything that has been out in the torrential rain with no sun for the past week and a half looks "scratty" but that's to be expected. The stock situation has EVERYTHING to do with the rain. Wholesalers aren't going to deliver materials, especially annuals, that haven't filled out the pots. There's a general rule amongst garden centers that if you can see dirt in a six-pack or pot and the plant isn't 6" tall, it won't sell. It doesn't, and garden centers have been rejecting annual deliveries for a week, now. It's also early in the season ..... As for perennials, shrubs and trees, they look absolutely AWESOME this year, particularly those exposed to the weather. What potted/balled plant wouldn't be happy in constant rain? I say give it a few weeks. Give everyone time to catch up. Martie

I just finished planting tomatoes in my new-as-of-last-year garden 'humps', or raised beds on the cheap. Three weeks ago, we emptied the compost bin and put a heaping shovel full of compost in a pile along the humps where we wanted to plant the tomatoes. Today was a pretty good objective lesson on what worms can do for you. Under every shovel full of compost, the worms had gone to work, and the soil was amazingly soft and easy to scoop out for the tomato roots. Every scoop had numerous happy worms. Just beside these compost mounds, the exposed soil was considerably denser and more difficult to work. And when I brush off the dried grass clipping mulch, you can see dozens of little worm heads disappearing back under ground.

Not very. The variety is not very good, prices are through the roof and i can get anything i ever need right from my fingertips (internet). Now i think i'm addicted to online ordering!

WHICH garden center is more my dilemma...we've got three truly local (read:independently owned and operated) large garden centers, tons of small-time nurseries and "farm stand" places as well as the big-box stores (HD, Lowes, WM & Tractor Supply) Wow, I love living in farm country!

So many places to choose from, so little time!

I am weaning myself off... Canyon Bounty farms opens its greenhouses in the spring and sells veggie starts. I went twice - one main buying trip, and a second because a couple things I started from seed didn't make it. I'm hoping next spring to have a better seed starting setup, and not have to buy any starts except maybe onions (I don't have much luck with them). Will hopefully find time to winter sow my flowers next year too. So I'm hoping to get the garden center visits down to about 2x per year, plus a seed order or two online.
