Regular paper works just fine, it's sturdy enough. I've never printed out the envelope shapes from the internet, I just cut one sheet of paper into quarters. Fold a piece in half, the crease is now the bottom of your seed pack. Then fold the 2 sides toward the middle so they meet and you can tape them together _and_ down to the paper underneath. (possibly fold it over twice, to prevent tiny seeds from excaping) Once the seeds are in, fold the top over twice and tape it.

If you have a hobby store or Jo-Ann fabrics near you, the crafts section has small ziplock bags. I get them at Hobby Lobby for one penny a bag, (they also sell them for 2 cents a bag in the jewelry section, so watch out!) so I don't fold packets anymore. :) I've heard that Wal-mart sells them, too, and some people buy them for about that price on Ebay.

Staples also sells the small coin envelopes in boxes of a few hundred for a couple bucks.

Tape can be an issue - small seeds get stuck to it in the seam line, then the envie has to be disassembled to use a small trade.

I know you want to make these work, here's the magic:

Rubber cement when used on just one side of the attachment creates a removable bond (doesn't matter if it's attached while still wet or when dry). Put it on both sides, let it dry (this is critical), then put them together. They will not come apart. This is the old analog "cut and paste" graphic design method.

And unlike other glues, you can rub away any that extends beyond the seam. Ball up the rubbings and you have an instant RC eraser for any more delicate papers that your finger friction might damage. In addition, it doesn't warp the papers like some craft (elmer's type) glues.

(Yes, it's a dissertation on rubber cement. Call me a dork.)

thanks for that tip. I also use the small zip locks, have ordered them on ebay. But now my hubby (seeders_husband) simply takes the bigger baggies (we buy them at the dollar store or dollar tree) and uses one of them sealer gadgets and makes me tiny baggies. We also recycle any bigger ones that I got when I was buying from ebay and that we get in trades.

funny things is -- I looked a cheap bottle of RC that I have here on the desk. It only indicates "1 side = pealable, 2 sides = stronger"...where's "let 2 sides dry and it's invincable"??? That's just downright strange.

New tip on recycling baggies - Did you know that fingernail polish remover (the acetone-based kind) will remove Sharpie Marker from plastics? Sometimes I just scribble a line through an old label, and sometimes really clean them up.

(The seeders_husband team gets an award for that baggie factory of theirs. NICE!)

Just had a thought (I know, sometimes it takes a while).

Tape isn't an issue for any "normal" sized seeds, just those super tiny ones like foxglove (the ones that gave me such difficulties with sticking in the seam).

So I'm not saying tape sould be illegal or anything :) just maybe use with caution with teenytiny seeds.

I cut tissue paper into squares about 3 inches in size. Then I put the tiny seeds in the center, fold it up and tape it. Then put the tissue wrapped seeds inside the seed packet.

Seed packets can be made by using plain 8x10 inch or so paper and tape.

I just fold the paper in half, top to bottom and cut it in half. The fold the halves in half and cut again.

Then take one long side and fold it half way, the fold the other side half way and tape it. Then fold the bottom up and tape, insert seeds and fold the top down and tape.

You can write the name of the seeds on the front, annual, perennial, biennial, sun needed or not, year collected or from trades or commercial seed, and I always include my name, GW name and email addy on them as well.

i know its kinda dorky but my dad always sends home stuff from the docs to my daughter, she always gets it all over the house and never uses it, so instead of throwing them away, (the note pads) now i just cut them up into 2" squares and use them as seed thingi's. never spend a cent, i spent the money on one of those paper cutters at walmart for those crafty people (not me!! ;'>) and do those like oragomi things. no glu, tape or anything. :'>> sometimes for the bigger seeds i cut the 4" squares. i'm still experimenting! LOL

Here's a way to make use of the return envelopes that come in all the junk mail offers.

I have a resealable glue stick that I use to seal the envelope.
