Any guess at what type of pea this might be?

Not asking for variety. Just what type. Snow, Snap, Shelling, etc. I started taking care of a neighbor's garden about a week ago, and I came across a pea vine they had growing. It was about 4ft tall I think, big plants compared to my Oregon sugar pod II snow pea, lots of pods on it, unfortunately they were all dry. I took the pods, cracked them open, and harvested the seeds. I planted a couple and they are just about to emerge from the soil. The pods seem different than any other dried pea pod I recall seeing. They are somewhat round, and "pointed" at the bottom. The seeds are different as well. Most I have seen are spherical and smooth, maybe a few dents here and there. These seeds are wrinkled, almost like golden bantam corn seeds. Very green. The dries pods have a smooth surface, tan in color. Can you at least tell me if the variety looks like an edible one based on this photo of the seeds in an open pod...? :

And, a photo of an unopened dried pod: (Pardon me if consecutive posting is against the rules. I'm on my iPhone and I can't figure out how to post multiple images in one post. I have no access to a computer.) ~ Seriously though, do they at least appear to be an edible variety?

It certainly looks edible, it is just hard to tell what type it is. Your neighbor might know what type. If your neighbor doesn't know then you can try it at all stages and see which stage you like best. (pod, snap and shelled) The key to whether the pod is edible in any form is how tough the pod is. My doberman used to love the pods I threw her after I shelled out the yummy peas but she didn't mind that they were a little tough:)

Depends on what you mean by peas. With English peas the short vine types are traditionally referred to as Dwarf. But some Newcomers to the trade may use the term bush. Dwarf is the better term, because English peas never have a true bush form. On the other hand Southern peas with short stubby stiff vines that stand upright are usually referred to as bush rather than dwarf. In either case dwarf or bush simply alerts you that the plant that is a short plant compared to other cultivars of the species. That same terminology may be used for other species of "peas" both vegetable (chickpeas) and ornamental (sweet peas).

Its a bag worm. Ussually found on pine trees and if there is a lot of them they can strip a tree of all its needles really fast. Check out your spruce and yews they like the short needles best. I've seen them strip a 6ft blue spruce in a couple of days and crawl dragging their bag to the next tree. They are bad news if not dealt with.

I don't have experience with pea shoots before except maybe eating it once, but I looked around and found that: you can sprout any ol' dried supermarket soup peas some people recommend using tall varieties because it's easier to get shoots and tendrils: Oregon Sugar Pod and Cascadia a couple of people commented that they can't taste the difference between pea shoots varieties: sugar snaps vs non-sugar snaps, etc. I would suggest using whatever you have on hand or can get cheaply and easily and maybe planting a couple of different types to see if you can taste any difference yourself.

It is edible. Rule out snow peas as they normally are smooth seeded peas. Those are probably English peas (shelling peas) which will have tough stringy pods. Snap peas have tender edible pods but are similar otherwise to shelling peas. The first photo is of the seed of a smooth seeded shelling pea Willet Wonder which we grow as winter peas. The second is a standard English (shelling pea) Green Arrow.

My sugar snap pole peas look almost exactly like that. Pointed pod with the peas squished together.... dried peas are wrinkled and uneven... the plant gets very tall.

Interesting... So it looks like they are either Green Arrow shelling peas, or sugar snap pole peas...?

The dry pods were sort of difficult to open... I had to cut them, pretty much. However - I thought Green Arrow pods usually have peas more in the 8-11 range...? All of these pods had 5-6 peas, max.

And the fewest I counted in all the pods I got was 2.

Green Arrow was just an example of a wrinkle seeded pea That I had handy. All of them both shelling and snap will have a similar appearance. If they were difficult to open then I would lean toward a snap pea. They have fleshy pods which when dried don't open as easily as the tougher stringy pods of a shelling pea. There are over 300 named varieties of English pea and over 40 varieties of snap pea. However the number that will get 4 ft tall is pretty limited. You can probably make a decent guess after you grow them out.
