zippy, I believe we did a trade that included Ghost seeds. I grew seeds from the same packet and got ghost peppers, not serranos. I believe I sent you both ghost and anaheim seeds. I hope those are not the ones you're talking about. But if they are...I want to make it right with you. Joe, You raise them from castor oil bean seeds and it is as easy as pie. For me, they routinely get to be about 12' tall. Some have green leaves and stems and others have a reddish tint to them. The seeds are poisonous and are the source of a deadly poison called ricin, so I don't plant them anywhere that a child or pet could easily access the seed. (That would be unlikely anyway because the beans are inside a very prickly pod.) If you don't want to save your own seed, you can eliminate the poison risk by removing the flower stalks before they form seeds. Sometimes you see the seed in packets on seed racks in stores, but more often than not you have to order the seed from a seed catalog or website. I usually get my seed from Select Seeds Antique Flowers, which I'll link below, and Marilyn usually offers at least two kinds there. She usually has "Carmencita" and "Zanzibariensis Mix" and this year she had "Pretty Purple" but it is sold out. Last year it was abnormally cold and wet here and I didn't plant castor beans until the weekend before the 4th of July. Despite the late start, the plants ranged in size from 5' in height in pretty heavy shade to 12' and taller in dappled shade and full sun---and that was in early September. When it was time to 'pull up' the dead plants after they finally froze in December (having withstood many nights of freezing temps), my husband had to pull them up because they were so huge and so deeply rooted that I couldn't do it. They are very tolerant of neglect, but the more you water them, the better they grow. Last year Mother Nature supplied copius amounts of rainfall so they grew like mad and I didn't have to water them. Seed also is usually available from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (www.rareseed.com) although I haven't looked at their website to see if they still have it or if they're sold out. It has been a year. I have traded away all my original seeds. I wouldnt post here now,except I saw your 'smartass' comments. I have bigger things going on in my life right now, so do most of us! And dont have time to post now. Thats why I am not posting. My life doesnt revolve around pepper seeds anymore. My licorice seeds came up and are giving my plenty of red heart shaped peppers right now. Maybe yours reverted to its parent plants? I have no idea. I dont get into genetics and all that. They are wild seeds. I assume they would all come up as what I got. But I guess they are reverting to their parents. I have no idea. And if I could delete this request, I would..but I have no idea how to do that. Since you have so much free time, feel free to get it deleted.
