Well my notes are not going to help with the question at hand, as I started things in my GH much earlier last year AND I started many things that many folks direct sow in the GH as well (corn, beans, etc) all of which were put out as transplants and turned out fine. I also put out a second round of things again later, which prolonged my growing season. So I guess if that's what I wanted to accomplish, then I actually COULD start many things now in the GH, which would be for a late sequence of planting (transplants) And for the stuff that should be planted now (as transplants), I guess I may have to purchase them from a nursery etc. although I'm not 100% sure what is typically put out here as seedlings vs seeds) Of course I can direct sow anything that should be direct sowed now. BUT First I suppose I need to figure out what actually needs to go out in what form (seed vs transplanted seedling).

You need to know your average date of last frost, first. Then you can follow guidance from Purdue, if it looks right to you: Time to Seed Before Last Frost 10 weeks cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower 10 weeks head lettuce 7 weeks tomato 7 weeks eggplant 7 weeks pepper 4 weeks cucumber 4 weeks melons 4 weeks squash I'm not in quite that much of a hurry to get any of the plants set out in my cool Spring part of the world. However, I'd give the peppers just about that much time for going out 2, or so, weeks after last frost. I've got the peppers, eggplant, onions, and snapdragons started - that's it. The weather in Toronto is, surprisingly, slightly warmer than my east-central Wisconsin location... so your results should be similar. Transplants will definitely increase the chances of success. I plant mine indoors about 2 weeks before I intend to transplant them, put them into full sun immediately following germination, and transplant them about June 1st (weather permitting). I've grown "Early Silverline"; it sets a lot of melons & ripens very early, so you should have no trouble. Wasn't fond of the flavor, though, which reminded me of a ripe "Armenian Cucumber" (which is botanically a melon). Your results may vary. ;-) The best short-season melon I've tried was a Canadian variety, the green-fleshed "Montreal". Came across seed for it this year, but can't remember where.

It might be a litte late. I have faced a similar problem, the watermelon and cantelope both were eaten before I could cage them and I had to replant them directly from seed last week. They just came up yesterday. With waiting until the middle of June, I would definitely expect very late crop if even that. I did see a website saying planting from seeds after the 1st of may is pointless so we may both be doomed. Good luck. Tina
