Rose of Sharon and Hibiscus Question

I have traded for a bunch of Rose of Sharon and Hibiscus. I understand the difference between them, but don't know how to tell if any of them are hardy. Should I assume that they aren't unless it specifically says that? Or will I have no way of knowing unless I can trace the seeds back to the person I received them from? A few are named, but they mostly just list the bloom color.

Diana, The Rose of Sharon (flat maybe a little hairy seeds) will for sure be hardy in your area.

Most likely the other hibiscus (round ball seeds) are hardy to your area. Do they have names on them maybe? I'm doubting it...

A Manihot (sometimes called a yellow hibiscus) is not hardy except in zones 7a-10.

Now if you happen to have any that are tropical, I know nothing about them...or if they even make seed. I'm thinking they have to be hand pollinated, and they are not nearly as commonly traded/shared here as the hardier ones are.

Anyone know about tropical hib seeds...what they look like maybe?

Here's what they are labeled as (the info in parenthesis is what I found online, which I guess I could have done to begin with!!)

Rose of Sharon - Lavender with Burgundy Eye (no info really, but assume it will be hardy in my zone)
Rose of Sharon - Blue Silk (no info, I think this may be blue satin; if so, it should be hardy in my zone)
Rose of Sharon - Blue Satin (hardy in my zone)
Rose of Sharon - Diana (hardy in my zone)
Althea Minerva - Pink with Burgandy (hardy in my zone)
Hibiscus - Texas Star Red (hardy in my zone)
Hibiscus - Sunset Manihot Abelmoschus (some sites say annual, some say hardy for my zone)
Hibiscus - Cannabinus (some sites say annual, some say hardy for my zone)
Hibiscus - Hardy Pink (I assume it will be hardy in my zone)
Hibiscus - Vintage Pinot Grigio, White with Pink Edges and Center (hardy in my zone)
Hibiscus - Dark Pink (don't know!)
Hibiscus - Crown Jewels (hardy in my zone)
Hibiscus - Texas Star (hardy in my zone, does this come in colors other than red?)
Hibiscus - Manihot Yellow (some sites say annual, some say hardy for my zone)
Hibiscus - Light Pink (not sure!)
Hibiscus - Flower of an Hour, Light Pink/Tan with Maroon Eyes (
Hibiscus - Dark Pink, Solid Round Petals (any thoughts?)

After looking, I believe that I have some duplicates! I need to decide which ones to start!

Hi, the white poppy is California Alba, sorry I didn't realize I had mispelled it on my trade list. It over winters in some of zone 7 and others as an annual. Long ago Native Americans in California used this poppy for tooth aches and headache pain. It doesn't have the strong alkaloids of opiate poppy but was also used as a food source (root and leaves). "Nah, limiting the statement to Alabama wouldn't make it any more true." I wasn't. I'm from OH, where the convention is the same. Also assumed you'd seen Rhizo around enough to know she's lived in several 'east' states, but that's my bad, sorry. Regardless, the whole discussion is a perfect example of the uselessness of common names. Handy for when ID is already established, but discussing the 'proper' common name for anything is really just an exercise in curiosity, there is no right or wrong, as you well know. Many people name their plants Steve or Betty... or Audrey. Not sure why you insist on picking the gnat poo out of this pepper pile. Flora, that's the prettiest one I've ever seen! Wow! My aunt had some of these trees in central Indiana, with white petals, red centers, but it was nowhere near as pretty as that, with the 'streaking' detail. I dug up a few of the little ones (can't imagine doing that NOW - they were 4-6 ft. tall & filled the back of the minivan) and they survived and did well in my yard and Mom's yard in central OH, same latitude from which they came. The one was about 15 feet tall when I moved from that house. What I thought was so cool about those particular ones was that it was so reliable about opening its' first flowers within a day or two of July 4th, we called it Independence tree. JMC- Blue satin is the most beautiful true blue ROS flower I have ever seen. The foilage is darker green than Lavender Chiffon, looks tropical, and it grows a little faster also. It is a single, sterile flower. I loved it sooo much I also ordered a Violet satin and the flowers on that were incredible! Brandon, I bought both of them through a licensed nursery that always sells on Ebay. THey are a nursery though, and sell proven winners of soooo many plants. They were both healthy and I didn't pay over 9.99 for them. They grew quite nicely also. Do a search on Ebay under Rose of Sharon Blue satin and you will find them. They are propular. GOod Luck!

Rose of Sharon (H. syriacus) is a woody shrub, and quite hardy. These often have very fertile seeds and you can end up with a forest of seedlings coming up near their parents if you're not vigilent. Many folks don't like them due to this "weedy" aspect. There are much improved modern varieties available. I've been especially pleased with the hybrid 'Diana' that was a USDA release several years ago. No seeds and very large, flat white flowers and blooms 'til frost. It is easily started from cuttings during the late summer. The hardy herbaceous hibiscus is H. mosheutos or one of it's many hybrids and varieties. I'm not sure if any of this species can tolerate Z4-5 winters, even with a heavy mulch. The evergreen tropical hibiscus that you see in Florida, Hawai`i and other warm areas is H. sinensis. These will not tolerate cold.
