New Garden lots of questions

Hello everyone, I am very new to this site and VERY new to gardening....My husband tilled my very first garden this year and I need to know what I should and should not put together in a garden I will list the things that I plan to put out and let me know if this will not work together.

Strawberries

Cantaloupe

Corn

Bush Beans

Carrots

Zucchini (sp)

tomato cherry and the regular

jalapeno

Onion

My space is 50' x 34'

Yes I know it is big for a starter garden but I am so excited to get it all out and started.

I have also purchased marigold to put around the edge I heard this at the home and garden show we attended a few weeks ago!!

Any help advice would be appreciated

These will all work together. Plant corn where it will not shade other vegies. Plant strawberries on one end or side of the garden. The berry area will not be tilled when you prepare for next year.

Of course, there is no reason you cannot grow all of the above. Be sure to leave at least 6 feet on either side for the melons to sprawl -- they will fill that space easily.

After you plant the strawberries, I'd recommend that you apply Preen pre-emergent herbicide on the bed -- it really helps to keep weeds at bay. There is an "organic" formula of Preen as well as the standard version.

Be sure to fertilizer well, as this is new ground which hasn't been gardened on before. If it was previously in lawn, the sod will add some nutrients as it breaks down, but not enough.

If you live in the Cleveland area like me, you should have the same results I have had. Peppermint: You will never get rid of it and it will spread like hot butter on toast. Contain it somewhere, like maybe pot it and sink it in the ground. Trust me--I've dealt with it, and it is not worth the hassle IMHO. Pneapple sage, basil, sweet marjoram: Won't overwinter outside. Rosemary *probably* won't make it outside, but I have so much trouble trying to keep it happy inside the house that I just get new plants in the spring. If you are close to the lake, you have a better chance of it returning, but don't bank too much on it. Dill is an annual, technically, but it will reseed everywhere. Cut the tops before they go to seed. You will thank me. :) this is another herb that I fought for 5 years at my old house. Sad thing is, I never used it. I was going to make pickles... never followed thru on the plan after I made several jars of spaghetti sauce and got tired of canning. thyme, cilantro, lavendar, oregano, chives, parsley, garlic chives: Should all grow back next year fine. I'd go ahead and pop 'em in the ground. lime basil, fennel, lemon thyme, dwarf curry, french tarragon, and spearmint: Never grown them, so perhaps someone else can help with these. I have found, generally, that my home does not have enough light to keep herbs inside. I've tried to grow herbs in the kitchen window with poor success--and it's a south facing window that gets a lot of light. If you bring them in, you will need a very sunny spot. Good luck!! Jennifer

I would also suggest that if your buying from one of the big stores, lowes etc, that you go to an actual nursury, I think they tend to have healther plants and often a better selection (and the price difference isn't much if anything for a 4" pot). With that many problems, If the bugs came on the plants from the nursury I would switch nursuries. (seems like every bug in the world munches on my mints-I figure I can just share) For now, I tend to start herbs with established plants because it takes quite a while to grow from seed. I'm moving more toward growing from seed now. However, things like rosemary are really hard to grow from seed-the seeds have a really low germinaton rate. I would really suggest propigating things from the nursuries. This is the best of both worlds, cause you can get the more unusual cultivars and even if the plant has bugs if it's not too bad you can propigate your own baby plants. Mint is really easy, I propigate by layering. Just take a long bit of stem, pull some leaves off of a one section and burry this section under dirt (hold down with a rock or a hair pin) leaving the tip of the stem with leaves still on it out of dirt and the other end of the stem attached to the mom plant. When it roots, you can snip the baby plant from the mom plant. You can also pripagate the normal way using rooting hormone. Basil can be rooted in water. Parseley, I'm growing from seed now-I poured boiling water over the seeds to get them to sprout faster than something like 21 days (not sure if that's effective but I'll see).

Peas and spinach like cool weather, as you have experienced with the bolting spinach. The arugula is probably being eaten by cabbage worms or flea beetles. What kind of soil conditions do you have? A garden that grows well depends on a lot of factor: choice of plants, soil conditions, nutrients in the soil and proper watering.

I don't have all the answers, but I have a few. I used to have a second story window box, and I know your problem exactly. One thing that can help is a product called 'Soil Moist', it is a polymer that absorbs water and releases it to your plants root systems slowly. You mix it into your planting mix when you plant in the spring. You need to be careful with it though, because you can also drown your plants if you are not careful...see the link below for more info. I have William Baffin too, you can prune it anytime. Cut the hips or leave them, it is up to you. Baffin is a tough customer, so don't loose sleep over that. It is too early to worry about your hydrangeas...they are not early risers. Good Luck, Helen. Welcome to gardening!!! your garden sounds plenty big enough! If you haven't already done it I would recommend having your soil tested, you can buy the little kits at the hardware store for like $3 or $4. Everything you are planning on planting gets along well. just a few things to keep in mind...cantaloupe's take a good amount of space, so you don't want to plant anything really close to them unless you are going to have them grow up a trellis or section of fencing. If your zuchini's take off good they can get to be 4-6 feet in diameter so give them some space. Plant your bush bean rows about 3' apart so you can get a tiller between them unless you are going to mulch your garden very well. Also remember rather than planting your corn in 1 big row plant it in a "block" of several shorter rows. I plant a "block" of double rows with my corn..I plant 2 rows about 6" apart then about 2 1/2 feet to the next double row. then after the corn comes up and is about 4" tall I side dress with a high nitrogen fertilizer in the 6" space and again when the corn gets it's tassel. Also remember to give your corn lots of water especially when the tassels appear.
one other tip...if you have to apply lime to the area where you want to plant your tomatoes apply hydrated lime...because it will also quickly adjust the ph as well as provide calcium for your plants to prevent blossom end rot!
