are the pop up ads getting worse

The pop up ads are driving me crazy the past few days. It used to be that I'd roll my mouse over them by mistake now they come on every time I look at a new topic. Sometimes I can't get rid of them even when I click on "skip". Is this happening to anyone else? I've heard that Firefox won't allow the pop ups but it kind of sucks to have to load a new program just to avoid annoying ads. I realize that's how they pay for the site but do we really need the same one to cover the entire screen repeatedly?

Hi Karyn,
I was told by some nice people awhile back to use Mozilla Firefox as a web browser. At the time I didn't even know what web browser meant, lol, but I was using Internet Explorer. Anyway, being the computer idiot that I am, my husband installed it and I immediately got ad relief. Then another nice person told people that you can make all of the ads disappear once on Mozilla Firefox by clicking on the tools, then clicking on downloads, then clicking on extensions, and then downloading Adblock. Now ALL the ads are gone!
So I definitely recommend doing this : )

LMAO...I remember when someone asked you (Remy) what browser you were using, and your reply was that you didn't know what a browser was...

I too use/love Firefox...isn't it great? I like the ability to easily open so many tabs at once...maybe even opening my GW favs folder...25 all at once. Sure helps on dial-up to have a page loaded and waiting for me when I get to it.

I agree, but you can beat them at their own game.

Karyn, You'll probably like Firefox too. It is said that IE is the least 'secure' of all browsers. My experience with it, is that it is a lot slower...really notice 'slowness since I'm on dial-up.

Question ... does ANYONE like, enjoy, or find the pop-ups to be at all useful? Has anyone ever clicked on one of the pop-ups to get further information from the advertiser? My guess is NO. I understand the need for advertising, but I hope to heck those who purchase the pop-up space are paying through the nose. As I scroll down a thread, there is tons of available white space in the margins for ads. Why are they not utilizing that space first? I guess if you can annoy the bejeebers out of your patrons and they keep coming back, there is not much incentive to accomodate their wishes. We get GW for free, but we are going to pay in other ways.

Thank you, olychick and ravencajun! I've been cussing these green underlined ads ever since GW started adding them. I have opted out of Intellitext so many times, each time clearing cookies and cache. Initially, it worked but then it didn't and no matter how often I went to the Intellitext opt-out site, I couldn't get it to work again. So, like nanj, I kept my cursor to the side to keep them at bay but that trick failed me in recent weeks as the ads popped up on their own. Grrrrrr! I thought I had Adblock Plus already installed but either I didn't or what I had was outdated. I just installed it again and, oh, happy day, the wretched green underlined ads are *finally* gone!!! Thank you, thank you! I will NEVER buy from companies that use this type of obnoxious advertising.

" I scan almost daily with Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware". This is waay overkill in my view. Prevention is much more effective than remediation. Install a capable and comprehensive antivirus and security system on your PC and these two software packages will be unnecessary. Adblock plus is good at keeping page renderings lean, if that sort of thing bothers you. Otherwise, just as with a newspaper or magazine, it's not so hard to just ignore the ads. Edit for PS Blocking popups is done via a browser setting and is a good idea. Also a good idea is to be careful where you go when browsing on the internet and never click on links or go to sites for which you can't be certain of their safety. By using good judgement in your behavior and choice of security software, danger will never be encountered.

I didn't even know there were popups. I don't use Adblocker or anything like that but maybe Chrome does something about them.

I, too, like Mozilla; however....they track each of your moves with cookies so much, I had to use Spy Bot Search & Destroy to eliminate all their cookies as my machine was truly slowing down. Will do this regularly from now on.

Wow blocking the ads, thanks for the tip. I could not figure out how to do it by clicking on tools though. So I search adblock and came across this link

installing adblock plus addon

it is easy, really. Downloading stuff usually confuses me but this did not.

just click on install now

it asks you to restart foxfire, so click that button

then a window show ups

It asks you to select a subscription list of ads to block.

Select the English version.

Then the ads are gone!!!! I had a gardenweb window open, I had to redisplay it, but I wow!

noscript is another highly recommended firefox addon.

Also, if you're worried about cookies go to:

Edit:Preferences:Privacy and change Keep Until to "Until I close Firefox" and check the box to "Always Clear My Private Data ..."

Remember that this will kill everything any site uses to save preferences, settings, passwords, etc. (like your customized Google page). A fresh start every time you start Firefox.
