Asparagus bed not ready, crowns arrived, what to do?

Please help! We're a couple of weeks behind on getting our brand new vegetable beds ready, due to the heavy snows and then insane rains we've had in the northeast over the past month. So, my order of asparagus crowns has already arrived and the bed won't be ready for probably another week (at least). What do I do? Put them in the fridge to act as cold storage until the bed is ready?

I think that's what you need to do, but I'd call the vendor and ask, just in case they need something else.

My asparagus just arrived and I am reading the planting guide. It states "Do not add compost until plants are growing (stage 3). Well....I have had my asparagus spot picked out for some time (a permanent, sunny location with well drained soil), I have tilled it and added compost and tilled again (a few weeks ago) in anticipation of their arrival! They recommend adding bone meal or super phosphorus and lime be incorporated thoroughly at the bottom of the planting furrow as well. Now what? Will I have a problem if I plant them in this spot due to the addition of compost? Sorry for the duplicate post, technical errors (i.e. user error, he he) Thank you in advance for you guidance. Mary

Sympathies!! Don't know what the previous "gardener" did. If not one of the all-male hybrids, these might have been seedling weeds. I can verify that normal asparagus plants put out huge root systems. One time we had to move several established variety trial plantings to another state. Had to use a modified digger on a tractor to get them out of the ground. Tiring, dirty work, but you'll reap the reward.

I leave mine until they turn brown, die and start to fall over. That way I know the crowns have gone dormant. Here that is usually late November - early December. Then I mow them off at the soil level and mulch the bed well till spring. Dave

You would be fine in North Carolina but crowns may have limited success of developing into healthy plants in northern climates. Since you planted I would water well to stimulate crowns to break dormancy and grow. Then allow spears to develop into plants without harvesting and try to prolong plant life by covering plants prior to frost arriving. If plants go dormant after producing a healthy abundant fern growth you have a good chance that enough root(crown) reserves were produced to keep plants going. If not you will need to replant next Spring.

after a month in the fridge some of them will be moldy. when planted they will still mostly come up but they may be weakened. So don't dither.

Actually I was only expecting to store them for a week, not a month. I'd go crazy if my garden wasn't ready for a whole month!!

I did check with the vendor and they actually suggested that I put them into my basement (it's a circa-1700s farmhouse, so it was actually built as a root cellar). Don't know why this didn't occur to me in the first place, duh.

When my showed up, and I wasn't ready to plant, I just covered then in potting soil in a bulb planter. Worked out great for me. They keep growing :)
