Finally - I get to transplant some things!!!

Thanks to keeping plastic over part of my garden, I was able to actually work the ground today. Not bad, after a week in which we got rain six of seven days, a couple of times 2" or more. It took a while to till it - the last time was nearly a year ago and it was packed. But after five trips over it, it was ready.

Twenty-seven each of Bush Goliath and Early Wonder tomato plants, as well as nine each of Rutgers, Celebrity and BHN 589. In between each tomato is a Parris Island Lettuce plant (79 total).

Rain is forecast for tonight (what a surprise!) so at least a few plants will get a start - if they don't drown.

I also got a tracking notification from UPS - my fruits (Sweet and Tart Cherry, Strawberry, Blackberry and Raspberry) should be here Wednesday.

This will also give me a chance to start charting Growing Degree Days. But on the flip side - this is the first time I have ever set tomatoes outside in the ground before May 15.

I was told that April was the wettest on record and that it was the second most rain in a month ever. I got onions, lettuce, corn and kohlrabi out yesterday in my little garden that has good drainage...big clay soil garden wont be planted til the 20th or later. I've 47 tomato plants indoors half of which are getting too big. There is one sunny day in the 9 day forecast....boo boo boo!

On the plus side - this cool grey weather makes hardening off much easier!

I have Carrot and Radish seed sown, Lettuce, Spinach, Cabbage, Brussel sprouts, Romanesco Cauliflower, Arugula and Purple Sprouting Broccoli transplants in raised beds under plastic hoop covers. So far so good.

Looks like you will be busy with your new stuff! I like your swing too! Are you going to put different pic in each "pane" or 1 thing flowing from pane to pane? country scene-walking down road or stream & background etc. Guess would be lot harder doing 1 scene. Someone on mosaics did a river on her stair risers & it was beautiful! Keep us posted on your progress! Jan

That sounds great Pat, glad you have spring flowers:) I'll be looking forward to your pics. My get and go, got up and went. I got both flower beds all fixed up and it gave me a terrible migraine. I've been sick since Thursday with it. Serves me right for trying too much, I know better. I have the whole back yard and garden to go, groan... I do have dafs and crocus up though, makes it look cheery outside. Yellow and purple:) Congrats again to your DH Westelle, I'll bet he's happy and you guys can travel. Brenda it has been nice here too, I've got weeds taller than the pruned minis in the back:) I'm on my 3rd set of gloves from the stickers!

I find that a sinlge layer of brown paper sack turned twice around a largish broomstick or even a section of PVC pipe works real good. Just glue the free edge down with some kids glue, hold it for a second then slip the whole thing off of the pipe/broomstick. You need to let this dry, so maybe overnite is a good timeframe. Next day you come back with scissors and cut your pots to whatever length you need! The brown paper sack works a treat as it is pretty sturdy, but dissolves into the ground when transplanted! I have used newspaper and magazine reply cards, but they did not hold up as well as brown sack. Parsley, watermelon, all our squashes, basil, tomatoes , well, practically everything in the garden was started this way. We will do it again next year too, as the whole affair fits on a standard cafeteria tray!

I found seedlings at a nursery here, this year. Last year, my now exboyfriend upended the tray my peat pots were in - I lost every one of my plants! I would've killed for some seedlings. Yesterday, I go on down to the nursery to pick up some stuff, and I saw them...and there were so many! Best part? Mine are way bigger. I was so pleased! I know I had to wait another whole year to have them back, but it'll be worth it.
