Hardening off too much too soon

drippy

I started hardening off my peppers 2 days ago. Today I had a long work schedule, so I put them out this morning (temp @ 50 degrees), but wasn't able to bring them in until after 5 tonight - temp got up to 77, and they were in sun. Some, but not all, of the leaves have turned whitish - clearly the plants took a beating, but they haven't keeled over, so I have hopes they will survive. I am wondering; is this sun scald? Or more likely a response to the cooler morning temps? When I put them out tomorrow (and I won't leave them out for as long as I did today), should I put them in a partly shaded area?

Thanks in advance.
