Passiflora membranacea cuttings for postage: 3 sets of 15

I've been pruning my vine back and I'm generating cuttings. It's a spectacular plant and is attractive even out of bloom. I just got mine in April and it hasn't bloomed, however there are pictures online. For example:

In a favorable environment it's a fast grower, to put it mildly. However it has a reputation for being difficult to root.

Because of its fast growth I'm able to provide a lot of cuttings from my pruning. Because it's difficult, it's a good idea to try to root a lot of cuttings.

My success with cuttings has varied; typically about 10%, but they took 2-3 months to root. Recently (to my shock) I was able to get about a third to root within 18 days. Below are some cuttings I started around Halloween, photographed 15 days later.

The cuttings are already trimmed and ready to go. I have 3 sets of 15 cuttings. I'd like to get them in the mail tomorrow. I'm sending them Priority Mail which will be $5, Paypal preferred.

I'm not giving these out randomly. Please let me know your growing conditions, climate and anything else relevant. I would like to get these in the mail in the morning so that they arrive on Friday.

I will not be surprised if people have trouble rooting these. Bear in mind that you may get none of the cuttings to root--even if you are good at rooting things.

Hi! I'd be happy to send $5 by Paypal for some cuttings. Although I live in Pennsylvania, I do have several passifloras that I keep under grow-lights during the winter. And--according to AccuWeather--our temperatures here are supposed to stay above freezing for the next week. So it would probably be safe enough to send cuttings now. If you'd be willing to let me have some, let me know the address to which you want the Paypal payment sent. Thanks!

Passiflora tripartita ID and cuttings for postage

Since there's a lot of confusion out there between P. tripartita var. mollissima (the "true" mollissima) and P. tarminiana, the invasive species that is generally sold as Passiflora mollisima, I thought I'd provide pictures of both. The differences are very clear when one looks at the flowers, so I'll post my photo again (sorry for the repeat), and a link below to a picture from Myles Irvine's site of P. tarminina. You can then click back and forth and easily see the difference. Or better, open two windows and look at them side by side. P. tarminiana flowers open flat or slightly reflexed; those of P. tripartita var. mollissima are campanulate (bell-shaped). However, I think you can see that that is only one difference between the two very different flowers. @waterwise999 I know that I'm incredibly late to the party here, but is there any chance that you still make 'Mission Dolores' seeds and/or cuttings available? The SF Botanical Garden used to routinely stock it for their annual sale, but now even the usual reliable suspects - such as Annie's Annuals - list it as discontinued. Maybe the mother plant was lost?? Anyway - my previous planting was fantastically happy here on the San Mateo Coastside... Right up until I went on an extended business trip and did it in. Rooting P. membranacea cuttings

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with this thread. Josh, a friend at Strybing tells me that he thinks we underestimate how much heat P. membranacea can handle. Perhaps someone reading this has grown them in the South? I know that my plant grows really well during our heat waves (but with cool nights even when hot). It doesn't like sun when it's hot. If I had to guess I wouldn't be surprised if growth is OK in warmer areas (although again someone reading this should know), but that flowering might be more of a challenge. It's an interesting plant even when not in bloom though. It's certainly worth trying--I'll send you a rooted cutting at some point. Stacy, the cuttings are all out, but I'll email you and we can figure something out. I'm not convinced bottom heat is a good idea--the ones above were rooted without. However...DaveH, a different Strybing person who posts here occasionally, I believe said in a post that he uses bottom heat. Here's how I rooted the recent cuttings: The medium was 50% perlite, 50% peat. I used reasonably fresh 0.3% IBA for rooting hormone (thanks Eric). I rooted 2-3 node cuttings in groups of 3-4 in plastic cups. One leaf was left on the cutting, and it was not cut down (as in photo) These were rooted under a fluorescent light that is on for 24 hours and is not very close to the cuttings. The temperature lately when they were successful was probably low to mid 70s during the day, low to upper 60s at night. This is much cooler than previous attempts when they rooted poorly and slowly. I think the following may have made a difference as to why these rooted quickly and the others rooted slowly at a low percentage: using fresh IBA and lower temps, especially at night. I think it's very possible the 24 hour light had an effect. Also there may have been something unique about the vine at the moment that makes it more "rootable"--who knows.

In advance of tonight's freeze I cut my plant back more. I have two more sets of 10 cuttings. I trimmed these way back--all that's left is a short stem and a fraction of a leaf. They will not look like much.

These have been rooting well for me, so hopefully 10 unrooted cuttings will be enough to get a couple plants. 22 of the group of 29 cuttings I started around Halloween now have roots. That is unusual for this species.

Again I'd prefer to give these to those with the appropriate climate or growing conditions.

I'll also include a small cutting that has just started to put out roots just in case.
