I have Yaupon Holly "Ilex vomitoria" if interested. Im looking for any fruiting trees or nut trees.

I've been looking for I.vomitoria! I have quite a large list of fruits/nut trees, etc. Here's a selection that will do well in your region: Apple 'Granny Smith', Aronias, Hazelnuts, Wild Black Cherry, Currants, Gooseberries, Mulberries, Dewberries, Scottish blackberries: Loch Ness, Tayberry, etc. thornless (Loch Ness), over a dozen varieties of Elderberries - some incredibly beautifully foliaged with large fruit; Peach, Roses: some with hips the size of small cherry tomato - several dozen rare roses; Wild Plum - delicious; Wineberry, American Highbush Cranberry; Passionfruit vine; Hops, etc.

She was probably talking about a fungus disease of the roots, found in the soil. If so, there is nothing you can spray on them. Though these are very tough little plants, your specific site could be problematic. The extension agent should go into further details. By the way, lab tests are available for such disease, also via the extension service. Call them for instructions about how to prepare a sample to send to the diagnostic lab.

Would expect the 'Gold' to refer to the color of the berries, which are more usually red. I do not grow I. vomitoria, but the somewhat related I. verticillata, and they do not give me good Fall leaf color, but go from green to tarnished looking nothing and then they fall. I would check the websites for Nurseries Caroliniana or Woodlander's Nursery, and if they do not list the plant, you might e-mail or call, as they are most obliging, and might know about your particular form of I. vomitoria.

Many Ilex can hybridize, but only if they overlap in bloom time and if there are pollinating insects present to transfer the pollen (or humanoids). So - see when each of your species of hollies come into bloom, and see whether you have a shot at some interesting seedlings. Otherwise, get the late Fred Galle's fine tome Hollies: The Genus Ilex for more than you can possibly understand about everything holly. BTW: The annual meeting of the Holly Society of America is coming up on October 22-25, 2009 at Martha's Vineyard, MA. Be there or be square.
