What should i do with my rain barrel (other than hold rain)?

My neighbor, an experienced gardener, gave me a water barrel/feed barrel that he got for free. I couldn't say no, knowing they can get pricey. What are some practical uses for this barrel? I don't want to set up a rain-catcher, because i live in Phoenix, and we get absolutely no rain. The effort of setting up rain gutters is just not worth the meager amount of water i would save.

My friend cut a big hole toward the bottom and use it for composting.

Change of heart? Use it to catch water and soak the foundation in summer.

Why not give it to someone who will use it for its intended purpose?

Oh, my -- A rose lover tries to get some useful information from other rose folk, only to be hearing about needed rain in California and a mythological definition for rain. Aren't there any other websites where you folks might "bless" others with your non-sequitarian comments? My heart does go out to the Californians along with a financial contribution of support for those in need. And certainly, mythology is quite fascinating. Everything has its place. Perhaps, there is a weather web or a mythology web where you can chat with others who are interested. All that I really wanted to know was about roses that still bloom in rain for future reference. Anyone else out there who might offer some useful info? CJ

thanks mulio and dickiefickle I will look for the spreader sticker. we got lots of rain again last night :( Looks like I have a few days to wait. I want to keep the blight away. So far so good. I get nervous when it rains and washes away my protection. I know some of the spray stayed on because I can see some at the tips of the leaves. I guess I can wait to see what the weather will bring. I don't want to use more chemicals than I have to. Karen

I'd love to, but we're hitting highs in the 90's up here as well. Regrettably, I have no cool weather to trade for some sweet, sweet rain! :-) Fortunately we're likely to get some this week. Hopefully. Maybe. If it doesn't all break up and fall apart again. Yep, roots on sod are short and can't hold much water, so it relies on us to supply it. Sod should be at least slightly damp at all times for the first two weeks or so, with water levels backing off slowly after that. However, sod/lawn will certainty tolerate or enjoy higher water levels for far longer periods of time. Pretty much, as long as the soil isn't flooded for days at a time, the sod will be perfectly happy. If flooded, the roots are denied oxygen, which they require to grow. But that doesn't sound like it's a problem.

Rain on freshly poured concrete basement floor. What should I do?

Thanks for suggestion about epoxy. In the room that was supposed to be just concrete floor, our builder was not planning to do any treating, coating, or texturing - I didn't realize this was a safety concern and am surprised it wasn't mentioned. So, regarding the safety texture created by the rain, are you saying because of this an epoxy installer could (and would be willing to) skip a step, hopefully reducing the price?

Run your grey water from the washing machine into it for re-use in the garden.

I would run my greywater through it in a heartbeat, but it isn't my house, it's my parents and they aren't too fond of the idea.. i'll probably end up composting in it
