Hardy evergreen plant/shrubs?

I have a very ugly front "yard" and try to dress it up with potted plants--{{gwi:46639}}. I had two dwarf Alberta spruce trees that have since mostly died and I'd like to replace them with something hardier. Those two large pots are the only ones that will stay out there during the winter. During the summer the area gets direct sun for about 6-7 hours a day, and it is HOT out there. Cedum survives through July, but not much else does. I am open to trees, vines, shrubs, whatever! Something that can grow up and shade our (also very ugly) front porch would be a big plus. So here's what I'm looking for:

-evergreen, or at least attractive without foliage

-can handle direct sun and heat

-can survive Philly winters

-can survive in a large container for at least a few years

-grows tall if possible

Thanks for any advice!
