Black plastic versus wood mulch for broccoli

I live in zone 6 (metro New York) where days have been in the mid-to-high 70's and lows in the low 40's. About 2 weeks ago, I planted broccoli plants (~4-5" tall)that I had bought from HD. This is my first year planting broccoli, so I wanted to make my life simple as I go through my learning curve.

Anyway, I had put black plastic down to keep the weeds away and to warm the soil. I cut 6" circles in the plastic so I could plant my plantings.

I understand that broccoli likes cool weather, so how long should I use the black plastic? And when the temperatures rises to that the plastic will hurt more than help, do I need to pull it up, or can I just mulch around it?
