I can't help you with the Blue Jade as have never grown it but apparently neither has anyone else here. I'm not clear what you mean by "small". Shorter plants, small ears? Actually most any variety can be grown in a raised bed and most choose variety based on flavor (sweetness). I have had very good luck using Peaches n' Cream (6' tall) in a raised bed. Golden Bantam grows to only 5' if shorter plants is what you want. Then there is a variety of Burpees that I have read about but never tried called King Kool (?sp) that supposedly only gets 3 to 4' tall. Hope this helps. Dave

Thanks for the input. Attached link indicates that Kandy Kane should last 10-14 days. I checked the corn, it was almost ready, two days later went down and took enough for supper, it was great. two days after that went down for serious harvest and processing-we freeze it-and it was past prime. Been gardening and judging when corn is ready for over 45 years, so don't think that's the problem. Zone 6, SE Ohio, what more can I say? Elevation is 810 feet, 360 degree exposure, rown run N-S. Corn is planted in rows (garden way seeder) 15" apart, 6 rows wide and 25 feet long. I remember as a kid in the 50's here, when the corn came in we'd feast for a couple of weeks. Had to repeatedly go over the patch feeling the ears to get the ones that were ready. No idea what the variety was....:-( By posting this I was hoping that I'd get a clue to a "quasi-heirloom" in line with not having to harvest it all as soon as the first one looked OK. I still think the weather had something to do with it. Been growing San Marzano tomatoes for years, this year's harvest was awful. 24 plants and 14 quarts in the freezer. Kinglerch, SH2 corns will cross-pollinate with every other corn plant grown, so you can't have two pollinating in your garden at the same time. In fact, many community gardens have banned their members from growing SH2 types because they will cross-pollinate (and ruin) every other corn grown in the community garden. In theory, you can grow two or more SH2 corns in the same garden in the same year, but it is hard to do it successfully and it requires that the weather be cooperative too. You have to time the plantings so the two (or more) varieties are NOT pollinating at the same time, because they can cross-pollinate each other. Timing of the plantings means more than just planting one SH2 corn, waiting 2 to 4 weeks, and then planting another SH2 corn. Why? Because the earlier planting is done when both soil and air temps. are cooler, so the corn germinates more slowly and then grows more slowly as well. When you plant the second SH2 corn, it is planted in warmer air and soil temps., so it will germinate more quickly and also grow more quickly as well. So, often the second planting "catches up" with the first and they pollinate at exactly the same time despite your best efforts to prevent that from happening. You can sometimes get around that by learning about heat units in relation to corn production and then timing your corn plantings based on heat units. That is how commercial corn growers do it. You can sometimes plant two SH2 corn varieties by planting them at least 250' from each other, which is possible if you have acreage. You can sometimes plant two SH2 corn varieties and NOT have cross-pollination if you plant a barrier crop between them. It has to be something big and thick like sunflowers or amaranth or something similar. With careful timing of the fall planting, you can get 2 SH2 corn crops in the same year without cross-pollination by planting one in March-April for harvest in June or early July and then planting the second type in late July to mid-August for harvest in October or November. That works for me here in zone 7B. Dawn

I like the bi-color corn for sweetness and flavor, and so I grow Arrowhead and also Peaches and Cream. Arrowhead is an early corn, so it's a more reliable producer in our short seasons but smaller ears. Peaches and Cream is the best in most years, but I didn't get much of it last year since it was such a cool summer. Planting an early and a regular variety is like having staggered plantings, but otherwise I think our season is too short to do anything but plant it all at the same time. I live in the foothills east of Tacoma, so our summers are maybe a little warmer than locations closer to the Sound, but we might also be prone to earlier frost. Some years I cover the corn with black plastic if it seems like the soil is still cold, for about a week after planting it. Sometimes that makes all the difference, getting the corn to germinate (instead of rotting in the soil) is half the battle.
