Grant, a question, I have 2 fruit going and another bud blooming, and the 2 fruit are very tiny at this stage but they are mostly purple, its that normal? They do look like tiny buddah's hands but all the fingers are together at this stage. The plant is now putting buds out all over the place and in a very few places some new leaves. But its still getting some yellow leaves and lost a few last week. Its by no means unhealthy, but I hate to lose leaves, I think of leaves as solar panels on a spacecraft!

fs... impressive list I must say!! how large are the elephant ears you are offering? Very interested if they are softball sized roots or bigger? I want large ears right away...rather than waiting for smaller plants to mature a few seasons. How will they fair in zone7? Cary, NC. Maybe suggest others from your list that would do well here too. Australian Finger Lime (2 trees in containers outside). Fun, very hardy, grows like a weed, interesting conversation plant. Mine are poolside, as well. Just note that they are pretty thorny, so they probably should be set away from walkways or seating areas. Patty S.

No, they don't change at the last moment. In fact, if the fingers are going to open up, they do so when the fruit is quite tiny. I've never seen any explanation for this, but you can definitely get both types of fruit from the same plant. There are some photos on my web-site - address below.
