Dealing with compacted 'soil'

We're building a detached, 2 car garage. Our lot is generally "low" and town requirements are strict with respect to set backs, drainage, etc. (sites were few and most were "difficult" from a driveway standpoint). We picked the one that was "easiest" and would provide the most "cover" to our backyard.

We have a nice site for the garage, but would like to "fine tune" the driveway. This means relocating the entrance to our lot and refining the curves of the existing circular driveway. We have the space to make the radius more accomodating to larger delivery vehicles (at present a UPS truck can negotiate the circle). Our proposed changes will make it easily possible for the oil man and the gas guy to drive in, do their thing, and drive right out. NO problem. The "drive through" feature is important to us, and our contractors have helped us greatly with the proposed layout.

I'm concerned about how to "rehab." the areas that were once driveway (and are now thoroughly compacted) that we'd like to "reclaim" to planting. How do you do this? where do you start? Part of the worry for me is how do we reclaim the former entrance to our former driveway so we may begin to establish a substantial shrub border to screen the opening?
