Comments (13)So I ended up doing about 90 grafts with varying degrees of success. The first round was almost a complete failure. About 30 grafts with fresh scions and roots but I didnt rubberband them. I just wrapped teflon pipe threading tape on them. The second round worked much better, I regrafted any healthy scions back into the first rootstocks but did it with a grafting knife, wide office rubberbands and teflon tape in baggies with moist papertowels on top of an aquarium. A few of those cooked, but the others healed when I took off the rubberbands and tape 10 days later. Karen was kind enough to send me some roots. The ones that were a bit shriveled had a much higher failure rate as they got mushy a week in, those that were hard and fresh worked out great. I did both cleft and side grafts. I seemed to have more success with cleft grafts when they werent too much wider than the scions, I had less success with side grafts. I think it was because I kept sliding the scions around and damaged cambium. After going through all the grafts yesterday and and potting them up into one gallon tall and square containers, I ended up with 50 grafts after sending some to karen. I dipped the roots in some beneficial myco liquid, mixed up a batch of soil composed of 1 2cf bag of Miracle Grow Potting Soil, one dry bale of coconut coir, 1cf of coconut chips, 1/2 cf of work castings, silica chips and charcoal. Hopefully they will like the mix. Ill be keeping them in our unheated attic which stays just above freezing. Interesting note. I was gardening at my MIL and cut off some yellow emperor ito stems close to the ground with buds and grafted them onto some thin roots. The green stems healed in 4 days but the woody ones never did....See Morefrankielynnsie
