I measured in my deck is 24 inches off the ground. First step up is 13 inches. The pot is 22 inches high. The green fine trails down to the tech which if I am OK get on the deck with the easy to get it to VINE. The purple VINE does not trail down the 13 inch pot. It looks like just sell used at the top of the plant I’ve been eaten. I thought possibly a deer because it would be the right height to eat the leaves on the top. It’s just that we seldom ever get deer in our backyard playing on the main road. Once this winter we saw their foot prints come in the back gate, and turned around When they saw there was no other way out and Went back down the driveway and down the main road (Warwick Avenue).

I agree Jennifer. Should have mentioned it in my previous comment. Occasionally I see them during the day tucked in new leaves on our hydrangeas. Before I discover the rats I would do as you do and go out with a flashlight and a tall plastic jug with a small amount of the soapy water. Got hundreds from my small dahlia area. When I discovered the soya sauce and cooking oil method it did a better job than my picking. But then the rats came and would tip over my bait stations. Had to get rid of the stations and the rats. Now I use a form of white powder that is supposed to cut the earwigs causing them to die. Doesn't seem to work too well for me. I try to focus on the flowers and ignore some of the chewed leaves, but the flowers are also susceptible, especially as they begin to fade. No more bait stations, flashlights and soapy water for me. My dahlias are blooming well and their flowers look great, but I know the earwigs are there. Ugh! Anyone know what to do to attract earwigs only? Maxyck

So... I ordered a jug of the spinosad to try to get rid of the critters. But there were a handful of things that kept me from putting it on. The main issue is that it only works by direct contact, and from the undersides of the leaves, and the way our plants were (so poorly) set up, achieving this was virtually impossible. We opted to just be patient, because no matter when we actually inspected our plants, these critters were nowhere to be found... EXCEPT in the bottom of our swimming pool. There is still a goodly amount of leaf damage near the soil, but only about about 10% of the tomatoes are inedible because of damage. Another 10% have one tiny hole, and no other signs of ickyness. The rest are beautiful and perfect and we've been enjoying fresh tomatoes every day. For our first real growing season, I'm willing to call this a success. (Especially since, if I'm totally honest, I don't even like tomatoes except for cooking. They're for my daughter & grandmother. The biggest hit are the Sugary Cherry Toms.) In other failures: I think we left our corn (Silver Queen) too long, and by the time we decided to try it out (the ears were so tiny), it was past its prime. I'm guessing a lack of fertilizer stunted the size of the ears, and they ended up pretty gross. Great successes, though, too! Our squash & zucchini were absolutely prolific and beautiful without any maintenance besides frequent picking! (Sunburst, Contender, Enterprise.) Also, a beautiful honeydew-type melon, Snowmass, I think, were the most delicious I've ever had. We started three from seed, not knowing how much room they'd need, and ended up with about 6 melons altogether. :) We're still waiting for any pepper action. I think something might be wrong (but last year's peppers didn't start really getting good until September). Also, we have an enormous tomatillo that popped up in the box where I thought I'd planted peppers. Strange, since we planted tomatillo last summer that didn't produce any fruit, and this one is gigantic and covered with immature fruit. Prolly TMI, but I wanted a record for myself as well... to look back and say, "Geez, I really had no idea what I was doing back then."
