HI Robin, sorry your thread has sat for a long time without anyone commenting upon the topic. I think that most people are simply unaware of what cloudberries are, we ourselves call these yellowish orange raspberry like fruits moose berries. Many years back we had picked in abundance the delicious, though somewhat unusually flavored fruits. I love eating them fresh and when canned they were absolutely scrumptious! Crops are variable from year to year, though for whatever the reason, production is now often limited to a few scant berries here and there, and often nothing at all! We have had a very warm summer, and the berries had ripened early in July. Had I sooner realized I could have collected and sent you the seed! Unfortunately, I am soon moving away from this current location and don't know where and when I''ll again be coming across the berries. Too bad we can not easily ship plants across the border, otherwise I'd simply dig and send you some! Terry

Hello, Last year I was desperately seeking Cloudberry seeds (Rubus chamaemorus). I am still looking to acquire some. I have heard August is when the Bakeapples/Cloudberries are picked. I know Canadians cannot swap plants with the USA through the mail, but seeds are OK. Here is how far I have gotten: I have received a small amout of seed from a germplasm bank and the origin is Russia. I received some seed from a kind woman in Norway. I took the Norway seed, and tried two sprouting methods with it, but I received them late, so the winter sowing didn't work. The Russian seeds came with instructions, but I have more Norway seeds, so I want to work with them until I get it right. This is one of my most challenging gardening projects ever. Each year I try something new, and a "challenge" plant. I think this one will be at least another year before I get it right. At present, I live in Massachusetts. My husband and I plan to retire in Maine, so we will be one of the "cold" or "short season" gardeners. We may even end up further South than some Canadian Garden Web members! In any case, I am building up my stock of plants--especially from the Rubus genus to have enough to start a small berry farm when we get to Maine. One of my goals is to introduce people to native berries that are unfamiliar to most people. I have big goals, but not unattainable ones. The Cloudberry figures big in those goals. If anyone is going picking, and makes something of the berries (the seeds are large for a raspberry and are not eaten), would you mind saving and sending the seeds to me? I will trade seeds I have, or other items such as earring I make or whatever we can come to an agreement on as a fair trade. For anyone in the US, I would love tha plants or seeds. I plan to make posts on multiple forums. I have a place already prepared for them, and Rubus grows extremely well in my yard--lots of wild ones. I am also looking for crowberry, lowbush blueberry, lingonberry. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much! Robin

Well, this is an old thread, but I just found it today. Anyway, I see people try to cultivate cloudberries and say it is difficult, and the plant carries no berries. A little background about myself. I am born, grew up and lived in northern part of Norway. Since the cloudberries have a high content of vitamin c, it was special laws for this berries in northern part of Norway. It was heavily regulated and if you picked an unripe cloudberry you could at least be heavily fined by the police. I am not a scholar of any kind when it comes to berries, just loves to eat them. But, picking the berries was a major event in the place we lived. I have been told that the cloudberry plant does not carry berries before 7 years have past. And, the deal with the unripe cloudberry that is red is that when you pick it, you rip off the leaves that grips the berry, and the plant is then useless again, and then it takes 7 years before it comes a new berry there. Since the cloudberry had such an importance for people living so far north with far less veggies and fruit, the laws was strict. It was a matter of life or death for people. A bit like stealing a horse from someone in the wild west, you were pretty doomed then. When the cloudberry gets ripe, the leaves that holds the berry, releases the grip of the berry, and opens up giving free access for your fingers to just pick the berry. So, it is a smart plant, and for those who are greedy and can not wait, they ruin the plant so they will not get anything the next summer. So, the plant punish those people. :-)
