Wanted: Magic Lilies

We had these in our previous home, but didn't bring them with us. We would like to get them started again. We don't have a lot to trade, but can certainly swap the following:

Purple cone flower

Black eyed susan

Assorted day lilies (don't have the names)

Perennial Bachelor Button (centaurea montana?)

Perennial Geranium (Geranium himalayeuse?)

Butterfly weed (Asclepia tuberosa?)

Lily of the Valley

If you have magic lilies to trade and none of these catch your eye, let me know. I've also got a few different sedums and maybe some other items.

by magic lilies do you know if they are the same as surprise lilies( leafs out in the spring then disapiers for months and pink flowers spring up in late summer) the other surprise is some years they bloom some years they don't? if this sounds like what you want I have some. I would be happy to send a flat rate box full (8 to 10 bulbs) for a mixed flat rate box of daylilies, geraniums and butterfly weed.

Hi Michelle,

Yes, those are the lilies we are looking for. I'd be glad to do a trade. I've never swapped plants through the mail before, so if you can tell me how to prepare them, I would appreciate it.

Magic lily (lycoris squamigera) is also referred to as "surprise lily", "resurrection lily", "naked lady". The leaves appear in the spring, die down, then the flower shoots up late July/early August. They seem to appear overnight. They get to be very large bulbs and are hardy here in zone 6. The flower is very fragrant and light pink in color with some shades of mauve.

Thanks, guys, for all the helpful info. Interesting how the bulbs are not baby sized and not attached to the mother. I've often wondered how the old fashioned daffodils spread so much in the old fields and abandoned homesites. Since I've never dug into bulb clumps, I just couldn't fathom this. Perhaps they do the same as magic lilies. The planting depth on the link you provided, Sue, was a shocker. I had always heard a good rule of thumb for bulbs was 3 times the size of the bulb. I'll bet all mine are way too deep - another thing that may be my problem. Odd that the link doesn't warn of the troublesome sulking after division. I can't wait until the foliage dies back so I can discover what lies beneath the surface. You're sure right about the expense. Same is true of hostas. I've seen a small piece for $3-5 when they grow into such huge mounds. One could make a fortune. :)

Blackberry Lily and Candy Lily are not true lilies. They are actually Iris relatives. If you notice the leaves of them look like iris. Their seeds(which are black and round) do not need to be sown right away. If you get poor germination, it is from other causes. I've grown true lilies from seed and they will germinate after storage. They do have a short shelf life, so they should be sown within a year. True lily seeds can vary in color. They are flat within a papery disk. Good lily seeds will have a darker hard middle within the disk. Lilies often produce good and bad seed(without the hard disk) from their pods. So you cannot just collect everything that comes out of the pod and expect them to grow. My asiatic seeds are brown. So having a lighter papery disk is possible. Doris, I just google Magic Lily and realize you were talking about Lycoris squamigera which isn't a true lily either, lol. I've never seen seeds from that plant. It is quite possible that it is suppose to have white seeds. There are a few plants that do make seeds like that. Ok, I just googled Lycoris squamigera and it seems it does not set viable seed or if it does it is a very rare occurrence so you most likely have seed that will not grow. Remy

great!

I dig the plants with as many roots as I can get, then remove most of the soil so I can get more in the box, wrap roots in damp (not dripping) paper towles or news paper, then wrap again in plastic(vegies bags from produce, shopping bags, or plastic wrap) put the name of the plant taped to the plastic, and pack them kinda tightly in the box so they don't move around. this has always worked for me, it is amazing how resiliant most plants can be.

mine are blooming right now but in about 2 weeks they will be done and I can dig them. please feel free to wait to send in early sept.

Hi Michelle,

This sound good. It would be good to wait a few weeks as you recommend. The butterfly weed is blooming now, and some plants already have the milkweed-like pods. It would be good to let them mature and dry out a bit. I can throw some of the seed pods in there also. I'll touch base with you in a few weeks. It looks like I need to set up my e-mail address in my account.
